Flat screen tv's - where to start?

We're looking for a 37" flat screen tv and have a budget of £400-£500 maximum. We want something HD ready, and we'd ideally like freeview.
However, that's the only thing I know! I don't know anything about them - ie, what are the benefits of LCD vs Plasma? Would we be better off waiting in case prices drop?
Can anyone give me some advice on good quality products and what to look out for? If there are any forums etc with customer reviews then I'd be grateful for links too
If only everything was as simple as computers

we have had our samsung LE37R88BD http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0096572675.1206128095@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdiadedildmfdhcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=589389&category_oid=-28723 (says £514, but we managed to get it for £468 with coupons and that.) since the beginning of the year and nothing has gone wrong, it's a lovely tv with great sound and very easy to use, the picture is clear and dvd's look very nice, (havent tried hd yet) no sure if it's 1080 but it's definetly worth considering.0

Funnily enough, I've been looking at that one but it's on Amazon - it's cheaper tooI also use a price-drop notification service that lets me know if the price drops within a month of my purchasing so I can apply to get the discount refunded to my account
Add into the equation that I get 5 ipoints for every £1 spent on Amazon and it's even better

John Lewis* will price match - so it is worth shopping around and then going back to then to price match. That way you also get a 5yr warrenty.

Well 32" price will drop but you want 37". I read that due to the credit crunch manufacturers will switch production away form the giant screens towards the smaller screens.Sharp said the higher output and the new production technology will enable almost doubling output to 19.44 million 32-inch panels per year.
