Late Payment for Self Assessment

Options
I recently sent off my self assessment form to the IRS before the deadline of Jan 31 but have since been informed they apparently never received it until 5 Feb? They sent a letter informing me of this and the late penalty charge of £100, dated feb 19, although I didn't receive it until 1 March! I am appealing, but when I rang their gen' enquiries helpline was told to pay the charge now otherwise incur interest as well, backdated from 1 Feb! I still havent received a reply to my appeal and feel that just like bank charges, this £100 penalty is disproportionate to the 'crime', which I still contest.

As long as you paid your tax before 31.1.08, the penalty will be reduced to nil - it cannot exceed the amount of taxed owed.
  • Sent in an appeal, although tax owed was not so much and the penalty is either waivered or minimal. Of course next time I will sort my tax in may and not leave it until the very end!

Always a good idea to get your tax sorted as soon as you can, saves running round near the deadline.
