Hi, Was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about claiming tax back on business mileage.
My husband does a hell of a lot of business miles in a month he clocks up approx 2000. Until recently we didnt know about the claiming the tax back.
Anyway, we have submitted the form to the tax office, we knew how to do the sums etc which has left us with figure of about £3000 to claim back. For last tax year and it will be about the same again when this current tax year ends.
We find it hard to believe that the tax office will just give us a cheque for this amount, so we figure we must have got it wrong, not the sums but the exact amount we will get back. So my questions are:
Do you just get back a % of this amount or is it tax again???
2nd question, how long does it take for the tax office to deal with this, we only sent the form 2 weeks ago, but curious to know how to expect to wait for answer or better any money.
Many thanks and best regards

I have heard that there is weeks of post lying around in tax offices, so I would expect to wait at least 6 weeks for a reply.
Your OH will only get tax relief on his business mileage, so the £3000 will be repaid at his highest rate. I imagine HMRC might want to know why his employer has not met some of the costs of this mileage, so be prepared to ask the employer for a letter confirming that they do not refund business mileage.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
You can claim from HMRC for the current year and up to six years previous if appropriate.0
