I am tired of being with aol , one of the most useless ISP's ever.

At least you have a choice. my neigbourhood is only wired with fibre optic cable, so we have to go with Virgin Media, good or bad.

I could do with changing, but all the phone line ISPs I have tried said they cannot connect to my house.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

I think it is a UK wide problem but some customers are on good ip adresses..? The threads on DS are good , without them I would have blamed living in bad house , broken modem etc rather than AOL . Can't wait until December when I will refuse to renew contract. It would cost me £7 per month to buy myself out-No way!

We're with Virgin Media (formerly ntl), and haven't had problems with them for years.

However, there was a period when it would go down or go slower than dialup, generally just when we wanted to use it.

I phoned to complain and was told the connection was up 82% of the time which was 'acceptable', it didn't matter if it was only doing what we paid for 20% of the time we used it. I offered to pay 82% of the bill and from then on it has been fine.

Surely AO(L can't make you pay full wack if they are not offering the service you pay for?

Look at O2 Broadband, ive been with them for 2 months now, and they have been fantastic already, any problems, use the 0800 number.

You speak with people in the UK who can DO something, without passing you to ten people.

    One example.

My line gets upgraded on AOL (past) and it cant support the speed, i tell them this but they think my modem is broken, i tell them it isnt and that i know it is a problem with the speed.

Eventually they give in and tell me it will take 3 days to alter...which happened eventually.

Now with O2, i sign upto the upto 8mb package and get 5mb, but even this is too much for the line, so i give them a ring, tell them that i know 3.9mb works fine.
"sure thing, it should be done.....now!" (a whole 20seconds later) its down to the speed i want and has been stable for 3 weeks now, no issues.

And they are cheaper than AOL!

take some legal advice CAB or Trading Standards

if your paying for a service & it dosnt work then you are entitled to give them a reasonable deadline to fix it or get out of the contract

I had a similar problem with Talk Talk - same firm now
both phone & internet had serious problems and they couldnt fix it and just kept going round in circles

I found it better to complain in writing, recorded of course as it seems to get things done.
Ask for all communications to happen in writing for legal reasons (they dont like this)
    & it makes em jump..

Talk talk pleaded with me to stay but 2 months after leaving they are now chaing me for not paying for a service that is no longer connected, despite being told to ignore these letters by staff

switched to BE and ther service is amazing

I totally agree not only is the service carp the support is also carp. I phoned to get my MAC and was offered £9.99/month (as against £14.99) but with 18 month contract. I asked what value there was in something that was carp for 18 months and there was no answer.

  • Wish I could move ISP's, no choice where I currently live. We have to endure Karoo, very slow, pay for upto 8 meg and get 1 if lucky (and charge around £20 for this wonderful service), regularly voted the worst internet provider in the country (richly desreved), could well be that they don't need to try as there is no effective competition at the moment.

Can't wait to move out of the area and have the one thing much of the country have - Choice.

Maybe I might suggest that you look at http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/ Often the cause of slow speeds is contributed to by the homes wiring. Post your problem up and see if they can guide you in the correct direction.

It isn't slow. It goes down for hours at a time and looking at DigitalSpy forum proved it is an aol problem ,not a house/wiring/weather problem. Unless it is a coincidence that we are all aol users and a coincidence that it breaks at the same time? The law should be changed so consumers can leave without having to buy out their contract when it is proved the ISP is not providing what you are paying for. I am with o2 so might go with them from Dec

i definately agree, they shouldnt take over your line before youve had a trial, such a cheating way of making sure you stay!
