Excess Mileage Charges

Options
My first lease car, and 3 years later I have been stung by excess mileage charges which I am paying back to my employer.
Since the car I had, didn't turn out to be such a 'car benefit' as suggested on P11's does anyone know of any tax I can claim back?
My employer has provided the TAX Office with details of payments made, but would be great to hear from anyone who has had experience of this and what to ask for.

Many thanks in advance from someone avidly watching her mileage!

I'm sorry to say that there is no tax relief available, Sammie:(

Car benefits can be reduced by any amounts paid by the employee to the car provider for the private use of the car, subject to certain conditions - see paragraph 12.34 of booklet 480 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/guidance/480_chapter12.pdf

Since the payments you make do not qualify........:(

Have you made sure that the mileage paid for by your employer is the actual total business mileage traveled. A business journey that begins/ends at home is allowable in full and not just the excess over and above the normal commuting journey to work/return. Employers however generally only pay for the excess travel. HMRC however will give tax relief on the whole jorney. see booklet 490 on HMRC site

I don't understand your logic, amf.

An excess mileage charge is almost definitely a charge for private use, and hence deductible from the assessable benefit.

If the employer has provided HMRC with details of the payments made, they will doubtless correctly deduct them from the benefit and it will all come out in the wash.
