COMET CANDY TUMBLE DRIER BREAKDOWN AFTER 36 hours

Hi bought a Candy tumble drier online, which boasts about great customer service. sport-smiley-001.gifThe thing broke down after 36 hours. Has a design fault I suspect as it swallowed its own door catch while on. confused-smiley-013.gif

10 days later is the earliest and engineer can come to fix it. They can't give a time meaning I have to take another day off . icon8.gif

In the meantime I rang and told them I wanted a refund and this thing taken out when the engineer came round. Despite being emphatic and saying I could not take another day off to wait for someone else to come around and them promising they would take it on the Thursday this did not happen. Engineer tells me someone will call and collect it. Another week later, emails and phone calls including waiting for 15 mins on 0845 numbers, I gave up and sent letter to MD Hugh Harvey at Comet with invoice for lost days of work. Finally the day after he gets it someone rings and says they will come round to pick it up.

I also think its fraudulent for people to advertise spanking great service when they fall blatently below average standards. The telephone service said there was just one woman to deal with queries. I've gone back to John Lewis, who seem to have much better educated staff in the store and online.

Do I have any legal grounds to get my money back for 2 lost days of work plus crummy service in the extreme. icon9.gif

Thanks

Under the distance selling rules you can return any goods ordered online within 7 days without giving a reason.
So yes you can get a refund BUT you will have to be there when they pick it up!

Good customer service is subjective, and I don't see anything about their service that was particularly bad (you will read much worse stories on here). It is certainly not fraudulent to advertise as such!

In terms of having legal grounds for claiming for your time off, you would be on very shaky ground. When else are they supposed to gain access to your property? Send an invoice to the retailer. If they pay up, great. If not, then just write it off as a bad experience.
    Gone ... or have I?

I bought a tumble drier from Comet once. The belt snapped on its second use, within 24 hours.

I wasn't sure what my rights were (I think they can insist on fixing it) but I wheeled it back into the shop and made it quite clear I wasn't leaving until they gave me my money back. If they were within their rights to insist on replacing or fixing it then fair play to them cos they refunded my money without argument. I've not been back there since.

I only use John Lewis now.
  • i bought a few items from comet and ended up getting a refund for all of them due to either not working when i got them home or breaking down quickly. i now avoid them like the plague.

I've bought quite a bit of stuff from comet and never really had any trouble (but I've never had to return something to them). Lets face it, all electrical retailers are difficult when it comes to returns/extended warranties.

Generally what you get from the different retailers is the same stuff, arguably its down to build quality, something they can't do anything about, they are just the salesmen.

DSR gives you protection Winner, you can return it for any reason (and if its faulty then you have a good reason). Also if you used a credit card to buy it then that gives you additional protection through your card company.

We bought a tumble dryer, washing machine and fridge from Comet when we moved...they all arrived on the same day as planned but every item was dinted or bashed.
Over the phone they offered us £150 reduction to keep the goods which we did, but it took them over two months to sort it out afterwards.

    Buy from Comet? Never again!
