Abbey Mortgage overpayment error

Took out a 200k mortgage with Abbey in August 07 and on 24 January 2008 made a 10k overpayment towards capital and instructed them that I wished to keep my repayments at the same level.

They took my money but used it as an advance on my monthly repayments therefore did not take payments via direct debit in February or March. My fiance and I were in the process of rearranging our finances at around that time and didn't notice that the mortgage payments were not taken until now.

I contacted Abbey to bring the error to their attention and they have offered to correct their mistake by backdating the 10k payment however we would have to pay them the 2400 which represents the 2 months payments.

The problem is that we only have about 2000 now because, having expected our repayments to be taken by direct debit, we thought we simply had more money than we had expected and have spent about 400 more than we would otherwise have done in those 2 months.

Not happy, but not sure what to expect from Abbey; any suggestions?

If anyone has any thoughts at all on this I'd really like to hear them, feeling at a bit of a loss.

  • Either come up with a way to find the extra £400, or just pay Abbey the £2,000 extra now.

I guess you know this already, but you need to be checking your bank statements - to not know that £1,200 a month hasn't been taken for a couple of months would be a major problem to me. If someone ID frauds you, you may not spot it very quickly.
