Cancelling gym membership

Hi,
As you can see I am new to this, and have no idea if I am posting this in the right place but here goes:
I want to cancel my 12 month gym membership (which I got in May last year), I've read through the T&Cs and it says to inform them at least one month in advance.
This is fine but from what I have been reading lots of people have trouble cancelling their membersips with LA Fitness, Virgin Active, etc so I'm wondering if anyone has got any tips on the best way to go about this?
Thanks

Read the terms and conditions you signed, cancel within the time scales as per the Ts&Cs and send your cancellation notice it in writing using recorded delivery"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I explained to my gym that I had been made redundant and they deducted 3 months payments from the remaining 5 months.0

Thanks guys, I think I will start the letter tonight! Don't won't to give them any excuse for not accepting my cancellation. Anyone have any good wording I could borrow?!
Thanks again!0 -

Make sure you contact them at least one month before.
Either pay 70p for recorded delivery and keep the receipt or if you hand it in personally then get a receipt from the person you give it to (and make sure it says their name not just a squiggle).
Some of these companies try to fob you off and say they didn't receive it.
Also after the last payment has gone out then cancel the direct debit with your bank so there are no "error".
I'm afriad I'm rather cynical about some of these companies but it is quite amazing how many of their cancellation letters get "lost in the post".0 -
Thanks lisyloo, I do wish I hadn't bothered joining to be honest! I hardly go and it ridiculously expensive!

definitely send it recorded delivery then they can't claim they haven't recieved it. I had similar problems with Fitness First and had to really hassle to get them to accept I wanted to leave.0

Whenever I have wanted to cancel a gym membership and have gone pasty my original contract period (12 months), just cancel the direct debit. you might get a let saying they notice you have cancelled you direct debit, can they entice you back but never had any hassle.0

When I wanted to get out of a gym membership early, I got my line manager at work to sign a letter saying that I was being relocated. That worked
