Martin Lewis and other MSE staff do not read all the threads on this forum, so the chance of them responding would be remote.

AFAIK, the Will Writing company mentioned is not linked to MSE in any way, read the MSE forum's rules.

If there are legitimate concerns, then the forum rules tell you how to report the issue to MSE staff. (See Forum Rules link at top of page)

I followed this link because I had received a mail shot from Argos offering to put me in touch with a will writing service. I have been contacted by thema end they offered to sell me a will for £69 (half price). I worry about a major retailer allowing their name to provide provenance to this type of scam.

    x3spires,

as you have seen above, legitimate concerns have been raised before by others but the site does nothing, even tough they could delete these advertisers if they wished to. Possibly to their advantage to leave them alone.

Just avoid anything that looks like a scam, or too good to be true. Salesmen need to sell and just need to get a foot in the door to use their sweet talk to hook in the money. Best advice regarding Wills is always seek the advice of a good solicitor. Yes you pay more, but at least you have the Law Society to fall back on if the solicitor gets it wrong

This site does what it can against the spammers and scammers:

Though it cannot always take the "put up or shut up" attitude with every example of unethical but possibly legal behaviour.
  • So glad i found this forum. Me & my wife had a visit from one of TI's salesmen last weekend after cold calling my wife. To be fair we had been meaning to make a will out for years so the call just moved things along.

We were quoted £65 for a joint will (half price).

He then started on his sales pitch about how much banks/solicitors legal fees could be. Apparently an OFT report states that the professional costs for an average estate are anything between £3000 & £9000.

If we take out TI's Family Support Plan for £2500 they will sort it all out & we wouldnt need to pay any further costs.
When we said we couldnt really afford £2500 the salesman produced another plan for £1750!

The difference being, the cheaper one could only be used by an executer once where the dearer one could be used as many times as was needed. if we were executers for someoneone else for example.

Anyway we signed up for the cheaper one as on the face of it, it seemed quite good value.

But after reading the comments on here i have decided to cancel the plan.

i think i've done the right thing. As has been mentioned previously. why would i pay for a car that i wont get for many years if at all.
  • As a contributor to MSE forums I find searching the forums is invaluble to me when investigating things I am about to partake/spend money on.
I have used Trust Inheritance recently to draw up a will for me,mine is very basic and I only have a couple of dependants(not Children)
I too was given the hard sell on the plans even though I told the salesman I only needed to write the will,
I have no intention now after reading this of taking out a plan.
But I will be honest and say I had considered it, and can see how more vulnerable people could be persuaded to part with their cash.
If I find I have lost £65 ( for the will draft) I will find this a slightly less bitter pill to swallow than losing £2500 (ish) quoted.
So once again thanks to the MSE'ers who have explained this from a sensible perspective ( and kept this thread alive!)
  • my partner has signed a finance agreement with this company some two years ago for their will 'services', they drew up a will for him but he never signed and returned it but had not cancelled the agreement and been paying £54 a month...can he claim any of this money back? cam anyone help or advise on this? they've not been storing his will as it was never signed. witnessed and returned to them, they'd not be involved in his estate when he dies either because of this! He is not very good at financial matters and there are handwritten instructions still with the paperwork telling him what he needs to do just to get the will signed and for it to be valid. Please can someone help and advise on this...it's cost him around £1500 so far and I've only just come across it!

    Hi Angie,

it very much depends on the wording of the agreement signed. However, I would have thought that such an agreement would commence once the Will had been completed, but I may not be correct. Most solicitors will meet for an initial discussion without charge, so it may be prudent to take the agreement to a solicitor and ask his opinion.

Alternatively, you could contact the Fair Trading Commission locally and discuss with them.

    Hope this helps

  • I've just had a telephone call from Trust Inheritance and after 30 seconds of silence when I answered the phone, their automated system eventually put a salesperson through to me to 'offer' me their will writing service.

If they can afford to employ people to make these nuisance phone calls then they must be making far too much money from their customers.

I for one, will never buy anything from any company that employs these cold calling techniques.

    Rant over.

Angie - the will in this instance is like a car and the plan he bought on finance is like insurance. If you don't use the car then that is of course up to you, however the insurance stlll stays in force and equally still needs to be paid for unless cancelled however no return of premiums thus far would be due. The more logical approach here would be to actually get the will signed (if an alternative will has not been arranged) as the cover your husband is paying for is for life and actually is excellent as the cost of legal fees upon death are completely covered which usually amounts to many £1000's and of course the process is stress free which if you've ever tried to administer an estate previously you will appreciate is a massive help at a time when you are least emotionally equipped to deal with it - hope this helps :)
