National Insurance Number 'Cards'.

Options
Hello

Not sure which forum I should be in but I thought this one, and I need an answer to this query:

Last month I rang up asking for a 2nd National Insurance Number Card as I lost mine some 13 years back and thought it was time that I claimed my 2nd one, I rang them and I was told that my 2nd one had been sent out, when I stated I hadn't ordered it the person on the phone just said they'd send me an official letter which confirmed the number was mine which I received. I sent a letter back to the department asking who and when my 2nd card was claimed and how do I know whose claiming stuff on my number? as yet I've had no reply so I ask what happens know? how do I sort out this to see if someone is claiming benefits from my NIN?

As far as I know, a NIC "card" is not necessary anyway. I've never been asked for it in over 25 years! These days, ID checks are done in a variety of ways and something like an NIC card wouldn't "prove" your identity anyway. So, basically, I wouldn't worry.

I'm worried as someone else has claimed my 2nd card and want to know if they could claim benefits or anything using my number?

They couldn't claim anything based on the card alone - they'd need to supply additional identity proof.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
