I've deleted an exe file HELP!!!

I was clearing stuff off the computor that the kids downloaded because it was slowing everything down and I've accidentally deleted a microsoft exe file  . Now I can't open word docs or powerpoint etc. Can it be recovered does anyone know?

I'd really appreciate some advice as I can't find the original disks to load it back up.
Many thanks

Is it in your re-cycle bin?

I'm afraid it's not. I must have emptied that as well. It was about a week before I realised anything was wrong.

A missing .exe file wouldn't stop you opening both Word AND Powerpoint.

Are you referring to a shared .dll that you've deleted?

As you may have gathered I don't really know what I'm talking about. I only know I deleted files and now I can't use Microsoft Office. I can't find the original disks to reload the stuff and my DH is about to kill me.

I've just tried that and it won't go back from today possibly because system restore was turned off. I've just switched it on but no joy.
    Thanks anyway.

    Hi Francophile.

When we delete things from our PC's they aren't really deleted. Instead the space is marked as empty and ready for overwriting. However, until it is overwritten with new data the old data is still there.

There are numerous applications out there which can "undelete" files by finding this data and restoring it. Certain Norton Internet Security suites can do it but only if the option is turned on before you do the deleting.

I've personally used a product called Handy Recover which I found easy to use and did the trick for me. However, it is not free, it is $39.

It will probably be worth downloading the trial and running a scan to see what it finds. If you think its found the files you need then you can purchase it to make the restore (it will restore one file a day for free but you're probably going to need to restore a few folders to be sure you get the right fles).

    Good luck

If you want to try an undelete utility try Recuva as it's pretty good and free.

However your best bet is to find the Office discs and re-install it.
