Why not go to the dylon site here
It tells you what you can and can't do with there dyes. Can even use them as a wood wash. And gives you the range of products and colours.
I have dyed trousers and and throws before never had any real problems.

ebay sounds a bit dear to me, try one of the cheaper stores like wilkos, boyes, woolworths etc. and i get my salt from the scoop shop!
