Another vote for not browning - the only thing I find it makes a difference to is sausages, and I don't slow cook those.

I don't brown anything either even sausages. You just have to accept they look a little insipid but taste just as good :)
  • I chop and prep everything the night before,
Am, kettle on, while coming to boil, prep cup for drink, and fry of meat,
once kettle boiled, I add remaining hot water after my coffee is made to slow cooker, chuck in the veg and stock etc, switch sc to high, chuck in meat, drink coffee,

Just before leaving for work, turn sc to low and go. Simples. No food needed to cool down, everything is all ready hot, kettle is on anyway . And only takes a few minutes.
today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

I don't brown it off either I just chuck everything in the pot the night before and turn it on low and go to bed .In the morning its cooked to perfection and I portion up what I need for eating that day and the rest gets portioned up into bags or the small plastic chinese take-away boxes which then go into the freezer when cold.Steep the empty bowl in water until your ready to wash it up if you haven't the time. This time of the year unless your kitchen is very hot your food will just cool down until you are ready to reheat to eat or put in the freezer in the evening for freezing.

Sorry, I know it's been ages since I posted. Just another thanks for all the replies!
  • Sorry, another post from me. I have really got back into using this site and the advice is invaluable so thought you would be best placed to help. I have had a quick look at Squeaky's mega index in the slow cooker section but didn't find the answer. I want to make cottage pie tomorrow night but I am out at work all day and will have limited time when I get home (I like to keep DS's tea at the same sort of time each night as he's only 10 months and has to take medicine 30 mins before he eats).

Thought perhaps I could make a cottage pie base mix in the slow cooker and just top it off with some pre-cooked mash tomorrow night (will do tonight) and stick straight into the oven, but can I just put the mince in without browning it first?

I have very little time in the morning to get DS up and out to childminder before leaving for work and just won't have time to brown off mince and sort it out as well as supervising him and getting ready for work. I was hoping to just bung it all together in a tub tonight in the fridge and chuck straight into slowcooker pot tomorrow morning and switch on, but will that be horrible?

    Thanks for your help :)

I do not brown the mince as such, but do fry it to remove excess fat, which goes in the bin and the mince then goes in the cooker

That's what I do too but certainly not essential to brown the mince just personal preference.
