and also had the fiver taken out, anyone know if there is a specific way to cancel or will they be happy if i just close the direct debit?

Hi Fragster
I think you can just cancel the direct debit. You should then get a cancellation letter from National Magazines once they receive the cancellation advice from the bank.
Not had my pen or a magazine myself yet even though a debit was taken from my account on 4th Nov. Think I will have to chase it up now.0
