It does depend if you want to make a commitment. St Johns Ambulance will train you to very high levels and standards if you pick the right division.

I joined up when at university. It had the advantage of getting me into music events free (but I couldn't drink, obviously) and having something on my CV.

When I moved back home, I decided to renew my qualification. Fortunately one of the biggest divisions is just round the corner to me. But I've heard of many other divisions that seem to be a little slow in training. Since joining I've done all sorts of qualifications and have an AED course on saturday (AED = using defibrillators).

SJA is free, but you have to make a commitment to help the community by doing some hours to 'pay' for your qualification. It's great for socialising etc. I'm 23 and there's plenty to do and see - ages range from around 11 upto... well, aged :- )

SJA is a good way of getting free training, but remember it does cost the division alot of money to put people through courses and its the other members in the division that go out on 'duties' to get money coming in to pay for courses/training and first aid equipment. I have been a member for over 9 years and it is frustrating that I put in over 500 hours a year voluntarily to build up the money that is needed and people just come along to get a free course and then just leave without giving anything back. SJA is a charitable organisation and we dont get paid for doing these hours, so please dont abuse the free training.

Agreed with Dolphinl - I used to be a member as a youngster and did over 200hrs of community service, and got involved with other projects, and Id find it frustrating to do a lot then have people come and go for the freebies.

However, it might be worth calling them, as they sometimes hold classes for a cheap rate so that those that cant/dont want to join can still get trained, but it covers the costs.

My local SureStart programme are just about to start a 1st aid course which is free to parents, cares & grandparents of kids under 5. checkout the link for a programme near you, ring 'em up and ask - if they are not running one - then ask for them to do it - the rely on community suggestions as to what to spend YOUR money on!!!! http://www.surestart.gov.uk/

    Hi There!

I am sure your local ambulance service will be able to offer a 'heart start' course. I think they're free and, incidentally are extremely good for fund raising for PTA, churches etc I know the South East Wales Ambulance Service offer this course free.
    Good luck

talking of heart start - any ideas where we might get very cheap AED (or free) machines (sorry, bit off topic) - we need a couple of extras for our ambulances :- )

follow this link, coming in my next post as i have messed it up on here somehow? back to the Wales part of the site, find your local programee and I'm sorry you may have to venture outdoors for this one - ring up or go along and ask. with our programme we just go in and say " i wanna do ......" and if they get enough folks interested then they fund it and put it on. 1st aid courses are always well attended!!! so you should not have a problem.
