Vista wireless 'local access' problem

Can anybody offer any advice on how I can connect to my home wireless connection to access the internet?
I'm running Vista Premium, can connect to my neighbours unsecured wireless network with no problems, although when I connect to my own, only 'local access' is available.
I am able to access the internet via my wireless connection using my PDA and I was able to do the same with my old laptop running XP, although the difficulty seems to be solely with Vista.
I've busied myself tinkering with the settings (although now restored to their original configuration) and have failed to correct the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
B

If you have secured your router by Access Control, you need to add the the MAC Address for your new laptop. Use All Programs - Accessories - Command Print and type ipconfig and press enter, you should see various referenes the one you want is probably IPv4 address, though if you used a WEP Control you will need the Link-Local IPv6 Address. Access you router setup page and enter.
Hope this helps.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
What security is on the router? Is the ssid being broadcast? Can you view your wireless network in the scannerEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I have seen this problem before with friends laptop running Vista
Trawled around the web and it would appear that Vista has a bit of an issue obtaining an address from DHCP (IP address) and certain Routers. There were "fixes" available chaging registry keys etc, but didn't work.
An easy workaround is to give your laptop a static ip which will solve this
Doesn't fix the underlying issue but gets you up and running. There is a Sevice Pack available for Vista now I believe, that may sort this issue?0 -
Hi, thanks for the swift responses.
ipconfig gives me the following:

The security on the router is WPA. My home connection is visible via the scanner and the SSID is listed as the name of my wireless connection.
Does any of this information help?0 -
Is this your router, and were the numbers picked up by dhcp or manually set? Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
can you ping it inside a cmd box, start, search, cmd then ping 192.168.0.1
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.182
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Disabling ipv6 can sometimes helpEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Here you go. Not entirely sure what this tells me.0 -
ok, to prove it is your network,
ping -t 192.168.0.1
then turn off the router for 20 secs, if the ping works before switch off, then fails after switch off, it is your router, and you are connected/authenticated
you could also try ping www.google.com
Something to try...
Start, networks, network and sharing center,Manage network connections, right click connection, ipv6, disable it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I can connect to my router, although I'm unable to access the internet through it.0
