Am thinking of getting daughter a Wii for her birthday - what is your advice? We have a chance to buy from US, can we play and buy UK games if we do? TIA - am truly baffled...

Short answer - no!
Uk wiis play PAL system games (these are the ones that are sold in UK shops and are for the European market).
The wiis that are sold in the USA play ntsc (I think that is how it is spelt) games, so it is an entirely different system to here in the UK.
I hope this helps, any more questions just ask!0 -
Thanks Melissa
There's just the one Wii console right? Buy that and then buy the accessories? Is it just that? My limited gaming knowledge is that the Playstations have different gigs (?), but Wii is just the one for about 170.00? What is Wii Fit and should I wait for that? (Phew - sorry!!)0 -
Hi there, There is only one model of the Wii and RRP is £179.99. When it came out christmas 96 Nintendo did plan to bring out different colours. Think this was probably a plan to revitalise flagging sales.... This didn't happen because it didn't need to. Wii Fit is not out yet, its basically a game/exercise thing and it comes with a motion and pressure sensitive board that connects to the Wii. If you want to see it in action just go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oNVIcMnZh4.

Thanks, if there's nothing else I should know, I'll go shopping now...0 -
Yeah there is only one wii. It has a memory built into it. You can buy additional memory cards but you shouldn't need to. We have had ours for over a year now and we haven't bought one.
With the console you get one remote (basically the controller), and a nunchuck - (you need this to play certain games!) You also get wii sports which is a collection of basic sports games for you to play: tennis, boxing, golf, bowling, baseball. They are a lot of fun though and should keep you going until you get another game.
If you want to play against each other you will need another remote, and for some games another nunchuck. Most people buy wii play, a game for about £35 because it comes with a remote (this costs about £30 by itself!). Wii play is just a collection of mini games but some of them are a lot of fun - especially for kids. The nunchucks cost about £15. There are always loads of threads on here for the cheapest prices for these items - so have a look.
Don't forget to connect your wii up to your internet, its really easy if you have a wireless router. You can download old snes, n64, nes etc games from the wii shop. You buy these using points that you pay for by credit card OR by becoming a member of club nintendo and registering your purchases on there. Each nintendo product that you buy has an insert with a panel that you scratch off containing a code that you type in. Also you can access the internet from it as you would do on a pc. Also you can play online against players as you can on the xbox 360 and ps3, (its only on certain games that you can do this)
My tip for the wii would be mario kart, its due out some time next month, its the game that everyone has been waiting for to play on the wii. I have pre-ordered mine already!
I hope this has helped.0 -

I just had a look: dvd.co.uk have the nunchuck for £12.99 free delivery, and the extra remote for £24.99 - but you have to pay £1.99 for the delivery on the remote, (so comes to £26.98).
Wii play (the mini games plus remote) is £29.99 at powerplaydirect.
