By the by.. my mother purchased a treadle machine years ago for £3,my father hit the roof..so she self taught herself with very little guidance from friends a neighbours and made the majority of our clothes. She went on to make all the bridesmaids dresses for three weddings. Unfortunately she only does alterations and curtains now. Clothes are so cheap these days it is hardly worth the effort.
That said I got a sewing machine for my 21st(many moons ago)and have made several things which I was very proud of now it is used for fancy dress outfits at halloween and gala times.
So persivere and have fun!!
