how long is a debt valid

Hi my wife was contacted last year by a credit agency claiming she owes them over £500 from a bank account she used to have around 8 to 10 years ago that went overdrawn by about £50. She has asked them for a full breakdown of the debt which they did not give and she heard nothing more until yesterday. When they phoned up her Grandad as this was where she used to live and threatened him with bailiffs as his address was where the debt occurred, he is now really worried and we dont want to pay anything to them. Is there a time limit on how long a debt can be chased in the uk

Have a read through this factsheet.

If it applies, then there is a letter to send by recorded delivery at the end of the link.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Also they can't send the bailiffs without a court order and then they don't have any right of entry.0

A debt is 'valid' for ever, but it cannot be legally enforced after 6 years (12 for a mortgage) unless you admit to it. This is called the 'Statute Barred' and is the only reason you need give for not paying it. They will try and bully you, but hold fast - don't admit anything. I think different rules apply in Scotland.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0
