covering a cushion

I'm going to cover an 18inch square feather cushion pad. Am I right to cut the covering fabric slightly smaller than the pad so it doesn't look floppy when finished ? Any tips before I get to work would be great.

  • Hi, no, best to cut an inch bigger to give half inch seam allowance all the way around - make the cover the same size as the cushion - if you make it smaller the cushion will be too hard and there won't be any 'plumping up' space!

I have just finished making two new cushion covers.

I read that if you want a "fat" cushion then the finished size of the cushion cover should be 2" smaller than the cushion pad.

Therefore if you have an 18" pad then the finished size of the cover should be 16" square. So measure 16" then add on your seam allowance.

If the cushion cover is the same size or larger then the cushion will look flat.
Feather cushions will flatten as soon as you use them but easily plump back up.

So it really depends on whether you want fat or flat!

I've used 20" pads and made 18" finished size covers, they look nice and plump and when used give some support to the back.
