Depends on how complex the estate is ... but potentially a sizeable sum, as they don't come cheap. But the Will presumably specified who the Executor was when it was written? Why didn't he ask family?
When my Dad died last year my Mum faced the same problem. I managed to talk the Solicitors (named trustees) into formally renouncing their role .. to allow me to d/w Probate on her behalf. But it no doubt helped that a relative had been a Partner when the Will was drawn. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

There is no exact figure anyone can give because the amount of work administering an individual's estate varies wildly person to person.
Once the Solicitor has gathered together the information on the estate, he can give you an estimate as to the costs involved in administering it to your father's wishes and dealing with anything that comes up.
In regards to the funeral costs, you can tell the undertaker to send the funeral account to the executor of the Will (the Solicitor) and when the Solicitor has the death certificate and other papers, he can then register the death with the bank and request that the bank make a cheque payable for the funeral account (obviously there needs to be sufficient money to pay the expenses).
Having worked for solicitors dealing with probate matters, a very general "they are only there to rip off dead people" kind of statement is not the view of any of the clients I've seen dealt with who actually appreciated having the matters dealt with by the Solicitor. But everyone is entitled to their view and will have personal experiences, good or bad. After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE.
