Council tax - quick question

Options
Just to settle an argument with a colleague,

Theoretically speaking, if you owe council tax in one area, move to another and use a different name (maiden name for example) - Can the previous council still find you?

I say yes, but my colleague says no. Which one of us is right and why?

    whos going on the run?

they will definately find you, always good to make sure this is paid,

you would have to put in your last known details, as well as any names known by too i think, your date of birth also plus the electoral role (sp) is bound to have details on that you cannot change

I read my Experian report last night and it's official - big brother really is watching us! Now I've read that I'm convinced that they'll find you - unless you go somewhere there's no extradition treaty of course ;)

  • Yes, I get council tax bills from a different council for a girl who has the same name as my maiden name - If that makes any sense?? - Even though I have been on the electrol role for and been paying for my own council tax since I was 19.

At times its quite easy to find people by matching what data you have with that held by other Local Authorities other times it takes a bit of work.

A lot of local authorities use credit records as a way of identifying people's addresses - these often show associated names including maiden names.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

we use experian to trace debtors and we don't make arrangements with the ones we find either. they get a visit from the bailiffs, an attachment to their earnings or a bankruptcy petition.

anyone who is that devious once will do it again so they get no warnings from us, we just grab the money.....
it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!!
