Help!How many signatures are needed?

Hi there, could someone please help me?
My brother in law and his girlfriend had a combined mortgage with Northern Rock. Unbeknownst to him she contacted Northern Rock and asked for a break in mortgage payments for a couple of months.
As he was putting his wages into their joint bank account, she was taking it out again. He didn't notice anything untoward until they split up and was changing over the mortgage soley to him.
He contacted Northern Rock for a month's break in mortgage payments and they refused saying they'd already given a break.
So the question is, are Northern Rock allowed to defer Mortgage payments and other financial matters on joint accounts with only one signature? Surely that can't be right?
I know he hasn't got a leg to stand on regarding her fleecing the joint bank account but she has totally screwed him big time on the Mortgage.
Can anyone help?

    What a cow!

I think he should politely ask Northern Rock about their procedures for this kind of request. If it turns out that they only require one signature, he could use their complaints procedure. If it turns out that a member of staff made a mistake, they are likely to do something to put matters right. Of course, if it turns out that she forged his signature his next stop should be the police station.
  • Thanks for replying. As far as I know he contacted them and they were quite curt saying they only need one signature. Which sounds ridiculous to me. I've said to him that he should perhaps talk to the FSA but I'm not sure what use that'll be. But as you've said about using their complaints procedure -that's a good first base I think.

I am with NR and I was sent a form last year that I had to complete if I wanted a break. I binned it but I cant remember if it required 1 or 2 sigs. I would not be surprised if it was 1 party, but I would call and ask.
