Making a rugby pitch cake - Help!

Hi

A friend has asked if I would make a rugby themed cake for her sons birthday. I am not a professional but have made a few decent novelty cakes for my daughter and she is happy i will do a good job!

Anyway, I was thinking of keeping it simple and baking a rectangular cake and covering it in grass green sugar paste. I don't know what to use for the H-shaped rugby posts though. I can manage the pitch markings using white writing icing and if I don't feel brave enough to make figures I can buy a couple of little miniature rugby figures.

Any ideas on the rugby posts? I had a look on google and found nothing on the cake decoration sites. I thought i could use some mini plastic toy ones but no idea where to find them. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks
dinks

As long as you advise recipients that they are NOT edible, could you not use some bamboo skewers covered in icing?

HTH, sorry, can't think of anything else so big that will stand up.

  • well first off, I found these and they look really good, maybe you can tweak that idea?

I found some football goalposts made from icing but no rugby :( Could you make them yourself from fondant icing? I'd advise making a few sets and only sticking them up at the last minute. You could roll it out and make them on some greaseproof paper, have a practise see how it goes :D

    Thanks for the replies.

I think white drinking straws could work very well actually, thanks for that.

I am still deciding whether to do it or not. I have only made cakes for my daughter so it's a bit different doing one for someone else. Would love to give it a go though

Thanks for all your help and ideas.:j

A little tip for the grass, if you put a few drops of green food colouring with some dessicated coconut and shake to mix it gives the effect of grass.

My dh had a rugby cake made for his 40th.

It was a dome shape which was covered green then they had made little rugby men huddling round.

Here's the link to the shop

Have to say was a lovely cake but they've put up their prices by quite a bit !

    Very simple but very effective.
