Council Tax - Statement

Options
Last year, I moved into this place and the council sent me what I had to pay for that year.

This year, I have not received such a statement.

Is it presumed that I keep paying the same amount as last year?

    Hi Schade

With CT going up each year it is very doubtful. You will probably get the info any day now. Ask your neighbours if they have had theirs.

You could call into council and enquire.

Probably late sending them out. I haven't had mine yet either.

The bills will going out either now or very soon. In the authority I work we will be sending them out over the next few days at around 20000 per day.

The amount you pay will be different from last year in most authorities - they will bill you in plenty of time to pay April's payment - its one thing councils are very efficient at.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

It might be your's .... but it won't be the same presumption by the Council;)

Expect at least a 4% increase on the overall bill. As other responses ... most are imminent but not yet out.

Yes - bills should be going out "soon".

The financial year for Local Authorities runs from 1 April to 31 March .... and your CT bill follows the same year. So changes to your CT will take effect from 1 April.

If you pay by DD, then the new amount will be collected, automatically.

    Many thanks guys!

I was querying because the statement I received last year was only up to February. As I didn't get a notice for the payment for March, I just pay the same amount as in Feb. Hopefully, they take my payment into account.

    Thanks guys!

You normally only make 10 payments a year for your council tax (No Payments in February or March), unless you request it spread over 12 payments.

Rikki, !!!!!!!!...sorry I didn't realise that!

I will deduct my payment for my first payment...

For further reference, does that mean I shouldn't pay until I receive the statement?

Sorry, it is my first time paying council tax and I never knew that....I feel so stupid :(

Once you have made the last payment on the statement for year 2007-2008 thats it, till your new bill arrives for 2008-2009.

You could call the council and advise them what you have done and they will either amend your next payment, refund you or at least tell you which way to proceed.

Don't worry we all made mistakes in our first years of owning our own homes. Some of us still do occasionally. :o

The Statement would be to 31st March ... it's the instalment payments that would only be to Feb?

So it sounds as though you pay manually and not by Direct Debit? If you've overpaid .. don't just assume that's your first payment for the 08-09 year. You need to contact them (as previous post) ... otherwise they may just deduct the overpayment from the total bill and then divide by 10? Which gives a different result (although same overall) to what you are anticipating.
