Guess differences are TV Tuner, 1GB RAM but i am sure the techies will be able to expand more on the differeces. Can the aldi deal be beaten? Any good Dell Quad core options out? Dell outlet anyone?
Sorry am not that techie so i really dont know what/how to compare them with great detail

A very valid question - general home use plus video editing/file conversions.

I could go for a dual core processor but as I am upgrading and tend to do this about every 5-10 years or so i need to know it will see me in to the near distant future. The markets are for ever changing - so would you or do you know of any other decent offers?

i would say the adli one has more stuff and looks the better one.
go for the aldi one.
2gb ram for a quad is a little under powered really need four put 3gb keep it in the vista 32 bit bracket
tv card and bigger hdd is all good
graphics card is alright for a high end home pc (not gaming pc put you can play new games on it just )
basicly looks like a very nice pc you will get a lott a years us out off that before any upgrades needed ,the only thing that will worry me is the cooling of the quad core has they are very good heater's put saying that it's me
it do's not come with a monitor has i can see,so another £100 to £150 for a good monitor on that price if you have not got one
the best thing is it's not from pc rip of world and it comes with a free full 3-year warranty you cannot go wrong with that (yes i know the sales of goods act put this is extra to that )

Don't bother with Quad core - very few applications are programmed to take advantage of all 4 cores, few enough are made for 2 cores and look how long they have been around! A good dual core processor will do as much for you as a quad core would. Save the money and invest it in more RAM and disk space, they will make a bigger difference.

Only a handful of high end computer games are designed to use 4 cores. So unless you are a big PC gamer, it won't be of much benefit.

He wants to do video editing though and those are the sourt of apps that do tend to supprot multiple cores. If he's going to keep it for 5-10 years then it may be worth getting a Quad Core now as more apps will support then in future.

Also Vista supports multiple cores and can run different apps on different cores so even if the apps are only single core you can run 4 at once IYSWIM.

unless you are going to be paying for proper video editing software then as cerro says you won't really make use of quad core.

I have a version of the Aldi medion one.. It came with 2GB ram and 1TB of disk space. I use it for video editing with Pinnacle Studio 11 and it takes full advantage of the 4 cores and absolutely flies through the rendering process. The other reason I went for quad was because even when using other software like nero recode or anything else that requires a while of computer time, Because most programs are geared towards dual core this means I can still play games on it with no problems. This was always annoying me with my old PC as it could be tied up for hours on end just doing video editing.

It also means my daughter can still play away at it and do what she wants without interfering or slowing down what I have set the PC to do.

Remember it's not just about one application supporting quad core, but also about many individual apps running being managed by each of the cores. It'll be faster in that sense.

I'm looking at a Q6600. The Q9xxx's have just come out here, so hopefully that push the price of the Q6600 towards £140 or so. The energy efficient of the Q6600 is great value and overclocks easily.
