My OH did loads of overtime in November so this month we have been able to save £1000, bringing us up to £7000 in total and putting us ahead of our savings schedule. I don't expect we will be able to save much this month because we've got Christmas to pay for and the car has needed a few hundred pounds of work doing. So frustrating when things break or need replacing and money that could be put in to savings gets eaten up!
  • Isn't it just! I think December will be a lean month for most of us.

    Hi people,
haven't read all of this thread so sorry if I don't do what's "right".
Husband and I have a 2 bed apartment (we suspect we'll get 14-18k out of sale of here, but are having estate agents come and view in the next week or so).
We have 0 savings and a few overdrafts but now I have a full time job we have 1.5-2k a month we can save. Husband has 1-1.5k bonus coming and potentially 2k inheritance.
We want to move to a 4 bed in the area, so typically 230-260k. We now plan to religiously save after Christmas and have a bit of a lean Christmas this year.
    Exciting but stressful!

Oh wow, I'm not sure how I haven't found this thread before- I have certainly looked for it! Subscribing right now :D

DH and I are currently saving a deposit to buy our first home. We are aiming to save a £45k deposit plus £2-3K extra for fees and other buying/moving costs.

Over the past four years we have saved almost £40k so are not far off our target now (I really wish I had found this thread earlier!) and should reach it this year so will go from there.

I've only skim read the thread so will go back and read it all properly soon. I'm looking forward to joining you and following everyone's progress. Being a part of the 'Save £12k in 2014' thread has been a great motivation this year and I can this thread being so too.

  • Hi all. New member to MSE & this thread. (Though I've been an MSE lurker for a while)

I'm 24 and hoping to buy my first house in the next year and I’m on a super-money-saving mission until then.

I’m buying it alone and so have moved in with my parents in order to save up as quickly as possible.

I only started saving in September, but I now officially have £3,400 in an ISA and I’m hoping to have £5,000 in total by the end of January. I’m doing everything I can to save– have pretty much given up on nights out, I’ve resorted to selling loads of my old things, no new clothes allowed until January sales, I’ve quit my gym membership and even Netflix membership!

I’m hoping to save at least £10,000 for a deposit myself (though a bigger deposit would be fab) and my parents have offered to help pay a little towards fees etc. I’m also thinking of buying in Manchester where many properties are between £80-110k… not sure I’ll be able to get enough of a mortgage yet though on my current salary.
    Save £12,000 in 2015 – 03/03/15 - £3000
Goal – Save a deposit for my first house :j

So end of year, and I've pipped my end of year target by a couple of hundred despite over spending rather more often than planned. :p

Car insurance to fork out for at the end of Jan, but I expect (if all goes well) to reach my overall target by June or July.

It's certainly my plan to enlist a mortgage broker and gain an AIP this coming summer.

We managed £200 in December- last minute christmas present shopping and car repairs ended up costing a lot more than planned but onwards and onwards into 2015.

This sounds brilliant! Well done. I wish I'd had as much sense as you ten years ago..You'll get there in no time.

  • Right, end of year total time! I have just spent forever trying to remember which accounts I actually have and unlocking various online banking services where I have forgotten the passwords.

So after 2 years of saving I have £9043.80. Quite happy with that, £3231.25 saved in 2014 without doing anything too dramatic. Hoping for a promotion and bonus this year which should help.

OH is saving as well but hasn't done his yearly count up yet but is probably around £8k. Even if I did have enough we're not ready to buy now so I'll just keep on trucking.

    Well done everyone :)
