    Congratulations Tara, that's amazing!!
Make sure you have a little celebration tonight! :)
Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to join you in the 80k gang! ;)

Thanks both of you :) I didn't celebrate as none of my friends or family know that I have so much saved, I don't know why I haven't told them. Some of them are in debt or have no savings, so perhaps it's a case of not wanting to rub their noses in it. :o

Does anyone else keep their savings quiet??

  • Hello :) I would love to join you! I'm debt free but not default free :( so I'm going to give myself a target of 6 years (as all defaults will have dropped off by then) in which to save £15,000. House prices in my area are as low as £70,000 for an ex-local authority in a nice area- which I would be very happy with as a starter. Although goodness knows what prices will be in 6 years! I plan to take it slow and steady. I'm starting at £0. I'm on a low income but the dream of being a homeowner is very motivating :) Feeling really excited :)

  • I subscribed to this thread a few weeks ago and I have to say that it's really inspiring to read all the success stories, thank you all for the motivation you provide

Progress is agonizingly slow as I am also trying to build up an emergency fund, but any £ saved is better than nothing.

My strategy is to break down the big target into mini goals of 250-500, and to move on to the next threshold once I achieve around 75% of the previous goal. I am tricking my brain into thinking that, as I am starting on the new goal with say 45% already completed, it will be easy to save the rest of the money.

I have found that I get discouraged when I think I have only saved around 6% of my target!

Payday update for August! After a slow start to the year, I'm feeling sooo motivated now that I've passed the £80k mark! Haven't decided what to do to celebrate yet, but I'll treat myself to something :)

    I saved £1,047 in August...

...which brings my 2014 (to date) total to £6,970...

...and my overall total to £81,097!

Bit of an up-and-down couple of months. Was accepted for a shared-ownership house, which would have meant 60% of an actual house. A really nice house, with parking! Which was amazing to me as if I wanted to buy (not shared-ownership) even a pants house in my area I have nowhere near enough saved. Survey, solicitor, I did the whole shebang. Then they withdrew their house from the market, just like that. Utterly gutted. There's now nothing else even remotely similar shared-ownership wise at the moment. And like you all know in the meantime prices have gone mad. When I started out it was looking like I'd need to save about 30-35k. Now it's miles more. I can't even afford a decent flat now. Whingey rant over. Back to saving saving saving xx
[STRIKE]Saving for my first home. Looks like I'll need about 30k...total so far £24810.49. Here goes! [/STRIKE]

Bit of a poor month for me, ran up a bit of overdraft which I've decided to clear, and also had road tax to pay as well.

Ended up only putting £300 away and have fallen short on breaking 19k.

However there are 4 months remaining in which to meet my end of year target, although the car also have MOT & service due in December and insurance due in January.

  • I mamaged to save £1022.16 this month. It could have been more but I allowed us an extra few treats as a reward for being debt free. This month coming sees the car service and MOT due and I really need to replace some winter clothes so will be a bit of a spendy one :)
In answer to tara's question I hadn't originally planned on keeping my savings secret but I think its a good idea. A friend knew I was trying to pay off my debts- mainly 'cos I wanted to be honest about why I couldn't afford do things at times. After I told her I everything was paid off and I could start saving for a deposit I got (jokingly) called a !!!!!. However, she's been really off with me since and I can only think the green eyed monster is rearing its head.
She still has debt but she also has a house brought when prices were a lot lower and so is probably in a better position than I am.
I think saying I'm saving is fine but I'm not going to mention any amounts or goals to anyone in real life after that.

So here goes...We are starting to save for a deposit now and I know it does not sound like long but we want to move in 6 months time. We have £13,000 left in the current account earning interest from the sale of our previous house. We have moved from north west England to the Cardiff area so have been renting for 6 months to get a feel for the area and just about to sign for another 6 months.

We should be able to save at least £400 each per month if we are careful so £800 in total. We are looking to try to have a 15% deposit and use a mortgage from the save to buy range with Nationwide as we have one of the save to buy accounts.

Has anyone used the save to buy account or mortgage?
