  • I'll join! Been reading this thread for hours haha. Very inspirational. I'm at £35k :)
  • I've been reading this and I've just turned 24 this week and decided if I want my dream house anytime soon, I'm going to have to start to save in another pot as well!

Might start small every month as my wages aren't that great but every penny helps!

I don't plan on getting a house until I'm about 28 so I suppose this would be the perfect time to start a small savings pot..

  • Hi everyone

I'm joining you all too and following this thread for a while, recently started a graduate job and can afford £250 a month which seems a little pathetic compared to some on this thread. But it also leaves savings for car, holidays (My first love! I worked out have spent around £10k on travel in the last 2 years :O at least it's, mainly, out of my system now), paying in my pension etc so it's a decent start.

I have a 0% student overdraft which should be paid off (for the 3rd and final time!) in 2-3 paydays time depending when my joining bonus from work comes through.

To start with I have £900 which was inheritance from my grandma, its sat in a rather poor ISA at the minute so I have applied for a 1st direct account with the 8% regular saver account. You can deposit £300 a month so by the time I've moved that amount across I should be overdraft free and ready to save.
I assume that's better than looking for a better ISA rate?

Well done to everyone who's managing to save, some of the totals are amazing!

I'm 26 too and have 2 kids, cutbacks are essential to reach your goal quicker and also to maintain a financially healthier lifestyle. Also teaches kids how to behave where money is concerned, my parents flew it around buying the latest gadgets whilst on a average income, lucky for me I can see the error of their ways and live a lifestyle a million miles away from what they are used to. Good luck on your saving mish, we're with you every step of the way!!

I have a spare room so I host students, all money from this goes straight into a savings account. If you can't do something like that then take a look at your outgoings. Start with your grocery bill, martins got a great guide on downshifting brands. I buy only value items unless branded is cheaper, make everything from scratch and spend £50 a week for 7(inc 4 students, nappies, cleaning items) think about posting an SOA and we can all help you cut back in your monthly spends and give you tips on how to save. Tale a look on the up your income board, surveys sites, swagbucks and ebaying your stuff is a great way up get to your goal faster :D

    Quick (and unexpected update)

From our wedding which was two months ago several items were lost that our venue had kept in safe keeping. There was also a mix up with one of the courses. We fed this back to the hotel management and have recieved cash compensation and a suite and 5 course meal for our aniversary next year. The compensation has gone straight into our new house fund. We have signed a confidentiality agreement so cannot mention any names but it was a refreshing change that a complaint was dealt with in such a professional way and the venue in question did not want to lose us as repeat customers and therefore offered us a complimentary stay.
  • Hi! I hope you all don't mind if I join :)

My boyfriend and I are looking to buy somewhere and are saving for a deposit. We are first-time buyers still living with our parents.

I know it's going to involve a lot of scrimping and vast amounts of cutting back. I am appalling at saving, so it seems like a huge daunting challenge at the moment!

There is a new development locally, and we're going to the show home opening in a few weeks so we can speak to their financial advisor and see if we'd qualify for anything with them or indeed if we could afford it! Fingers crossed, but I have a feeling it will be out of our reach. At least we can get some advice though!

    Hi all
Pay day update from me - added another £1500 to my savings today. Excited for next month as I'll hit the £25k mark!! Woo Hoo I'm feeling a tad proud of myself! Me and boyf have a saving jar as well so going to empty that this week and add that to our grand total. Think I need to treat myself and book a cheap holiday to celebrate reaching £25k

    Happy saving x
