I really think I could do with some targets too. I began saving in the new year but I'm sure I could have done better with some targets... I want to get out of my family home asap as I'm so sick of my sister trying to get me to move out :(.

Do you reward yourself when you hit the targets?

This is my problem! I consider it, but then when it comes to spending the money to treat myself, I just can't seem to justify the money as the house deposit means more to me. I recently hit a milestone with my savings - 40k, but worry i'm a little too obsessed with this savings lark as I literally think about it everyday. Is that sad? I do still purchase clothes and bits and bobs that I need, but not a reward as such. What are everyone elses thoughts on treating themselves when hitting a target? :)

You don't wanna know how long it's taken, it was mainly lack of motivation and moving house that resulted in it taking so long, however we are now living in a converted farm building to help us save it's never going to be a permanent arrangement and it is too small for our family (although so far we love it ).

I think rewards are good if you set limits and I don't think they hold be new clothes either as this is a need rather than a reward unless it's a more expensive item, our reward when we hit £5k will be Chinese.

I agree that little targets help, after all you can't eat an elephant in one go, you need to break it up into small bitesize pieces :rotfl:

I have 6 goals, plus a yearly one. They're broken down into £50K chunks (except the yearly one). The 6th goal is for the whole amount. I'm hoping to have a mortgage before I reach all 6 goals ;). If I didn't have these mini goals I don't think I'd be as motivated to save as the end result is just too overwhelming.

Good luck everyone and remember that any saving is better than none. :)

My reward is either spending a low denomination voucher I've made doing surveys (guilt free then :D) or bake myself something, usually pavlova as the meringue isn't too calorific! I become very obsessed with saving too but then I can swing the other way and not care at all. I don't spend wildly but not keep an eye on the ank balance.

Hi guys, haven't posted for a few months, because unfortunately I've split up with my girlfriend (well, she split up with me) so I haven't felt the need to "save for a house".:silenced:

This month though I got back into the swing of things and I've worked out I've got just under £16,000 saved! That's a thousand added in three months. Not bad really. I just know that I'm going to need at least £30k before I can start to look at getting a mortgage on my very very very low wage, so I probably won't be buying next year now

Sorry to hear that you plans have changed so drastically - but the silver lining (if you're looking for one) is that the break-up could have been far messier if you'd both been sharing a house/mortgage.

And you're doing really well in the savings department - I think a lot of people on this board are in it for the long hall, saving bits and pieces here and there to get to their goals.

It might take time, but you will get there

  • I'm sorry to hear that mrcashman. I don't know your circumstances but it sounds like you've done really well to save that much if you're on a very low wage so well done! Perhaps try and focus on upping it the amount so it will take your mind off everything :)

Eviekins, I also think about saving a lot. I think it's good to keep focused - although I do find myself reading about saving quite a bit and then realising in that time I could of actually done something to increase my savings rather than think about it. So I join the sad group too :)

    Hi all

Little pay day update from me, added another £1k to the deposit pot. I think the next big milestone for me will be when I reach £25k which will be a few months off. I'm going on my first shopping trip in god knows how long tomorrow. I think I have actually forgotten how to shop because I'm constantly thinking about saving - sad I know! Well I figure it's my birthday next week so live a little! Hope your all happy and saving. Btw are any of you doing the spare change challenge? My pig has been full several times over the year so I'm happy :) x
