I am hoping that when my deposit is saved up my partner might come on the mortgage with me (he doesn't have any savings) but he could come on it with me and we could get a better property with two salaries. I would have to write into it somewhere I paid the deposit but.... I will see where we are when I reach that. He rents a room somewhere. Could be so much cheaper than on my own. But I don't know how I would ask if he would like to live with me and my son....with a mortgage over our heads. Time will tell. xx

  • Well my other half has decided that I've finally lost the plot with this savings lark.

I was putting an old handbag into a charity collection bag that had come, so obviously had to empty it of old tissues, receipts fluff etc etc and I found £3.70 in the pocket. Then proceeded to go through every bag and coat pocket in the wardrobe just to see if there were any other surpises that I could unearth. Then I was caught with my hands down the settee seeing if there was any treasure down there ......... I now have an extra £9.60 towards the fund, a dusty vitamin tablet and a pen lid.:j:j
2013 - Finally got the house we' ve worked so hard to get......now it's a life of diy and no money....couldn't be happier 😊
2020 - mortgage free target set 8 years and counting 🎯
Even the longest walks start with one small step....get your boots on.

I think Samtoby you will have to do what I have been thinking of doing - just split the mortgage unevenly so you own more than 50%; that way you haven't 'wasted' the fact that you saved all of the deposit!

I have a terribly spendthrift OH who runs an expensive car and likes to fly aeroplanes in his spare time :naughty: on a relatively low wage, so I expect I will pay for everything: house deposit, fees, wedding (if we get there lol)!!!

(why is there no rolling eyes smilie?!)

Scrap that; added £400 today... 30% there already. We didn't realise how fast we'd be able to save if we stuck our minds to it. DW has applied for a part time supermarket job to boost it even more.

I will have to see when I get to buying. Otherwise if he moves in he will have to be a lodger and that will be complicated. x

  • Hi all,
I'm totally new to the idea of a mortgage, and at the moment just know we need to save for a deposit...however, I'm unsure how much we realistically will need. I've heard 20% and 30% of the purchase price bandied around as ballpark figures, but is that actually true these days?

We've got around £10,000 at the moment, and I'm wondering how much more we'll need (and therefore how much longer it will take!)

I know it's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' type question, but I thought I would ask anyway! We're probably in an area where a house that would be suitable is around £150-£180k.

    Any thoughts?!
