I suggest any old stuff you can get your hands on for now then buy all new when you buy a house-you never know what will fit and what wont. I've made this mistake before, bought a big welsh dresser for my kitchen but had to move a year later into a smaller property and sell furniture. Not only that but your tastes might change. One minute I love oak, the next walnut, then ultra modern glass...2025 Mortgage start £378K 2025 Overpayment £103 Savings Challenge 2025 **MONEY MAKES ME HAPPY**0

I definitely agree on the size thing! I had already paid for lovely oak bedroom furniture that thankfully failed to arrive so I got my money back. It wouldn't have fit in my new shoe box of a room at all!0

We're renting at the moment while saving for a descent deposit.
We've got out furniture from various places (as was cheapest - friends, e-bay, gumtree, second-hand shops, IKEA) - when we first moved into this place we didn't want to spend a load of money in one go. Once we buy our own place which we'll plan on being in for many years, we will slowly replace it with better as and when we can afford it - we'll have enough saved for good quality white good by the time we move (currently provided in rented).
We don't currently know what the house size/style/decor will be, so will be nice to get suitable things for the property when we finally get there.0 -
I've just watched Location, Location, Location and its spured me on even more! I cant wait for the day that I walk into my own house with original features and natural light bouncing from every wall...*sigh*2025 Mortgage start £378K 2025 Overpayment £103 Savings Challenge 2025 **MONEY MAKES ME HAPPY**0

payday update for me - its a depressing one. out of the £700 odd i should be saving i only managed £200
had a bad month tho: house DIY, car problems and too many birthdays in sept - would like to think oct will be better but im not sure, got a weekend away more birthdays and car is going for its MOT - ahh
also got some bank charges to contend with due to a mix-up with one of my accounts. so unfair! ended up £5 overdrawn for 1 day until i noticed the error, gonna charge me bout £30 for it. cant see how thats justified
also, i cant stop looking on rightmove, im actually addicted lolMoved into dream house - 17/08/12Savings - £600Xmas 2013 - £43Credit card - £2741 :eek:0 -
Not looking forward to paying the first month, plus deposit, plus a new bed, new furniture and other bits and bobs all in one go. It's a bit of a debate whether I buy decent stuff now to start collecting for a house or cheap crap to make do to be replaced later. Either way the total is on the way down!
Don't get expensive new furniture - you'll never know if it will fit into the new place you want to buy. Furniture devalues instantly, a decent chest of drawers may be £300 new, but £50 second hand. We got our stuff from British Heart foundation shop, freecycle, office clearout, ebay, family, Argos clearance, and topped up with a few bits from IKEA. We first got some second hand bits that we liked and then bought a few new things so that everything matches. By buying second hand, we got stuff of much better quality that we could afford new. It requires some patience though!0 -
:jPayday update!:j
So chuffed today, we have reached £30k!
A year and a month ago we got married and all we had was my ISA with less than £3k in.
I would estimate our living expenses have been about £750 a month, but we don't feel like we are making too many sacrifices that it isn't sustainable. I couldn't have kept up working 60 hours a week but couldn't turn down the hours when they were there.
After a month or two of being strict, we naturally became better with money and I don't enjoy spending it anymore!
£20 for a greasy, unhealthy takeaway - NO WAY!

So what do people think prices will be like in 10 years time? I have seen 2 bed flats for under £120k & houses for under £150k. This is in Worthing & we want to be as close to Worthing as possible.
When we do move I'll be looking for hospital jobs between Portsmonth & Brighton. As we live in London I get the extra allowance on top of band 2 pay (£13,903 + £4,036), Band 2 goes up to £17,003. I'd be looking to be on band 3 (£15,860-18,827) by the time we move down to worthing (5 years time), I'd also have a health degree.
I'd be looking to either go into Nursing or train as an Associate Practitioner & move up bands.
Basically I'd like to be earning £22-25k. My OH would prob make £13k.
Can you get a mortgage based on 1 persons salary, so that we would get £77k ish or would that take into account both salarys even it one would be near retirement?
I'm looking to save £200 a month for 10 years so have a deposit of £24k0 -
