I think oldish vans will be the way for me for a few years...wont lose too much value and can sell and buy without doing much work on them. No matter what happens with my wealth i will never ever buy brand new.

After some time sorting out my accounts, setting up standing orders, and using Excel, I have made my first saving towards my holiday for Amercia - £500.00.

I'm hoping to save £50 at the end of the month out of the £218 I have left at the start of the month after bills.

I sometimes think I should get rid of my car. I worked out it costs around £1000 a year, all in, which could go towards my savings if I sold it (plus the money from the sale), but even though I really don't need it, and don't often use it, I can't bear to get rid of it. It's so reliable for an old car, so it seems a shame to get rid of it, when I might not be so lucky next time. It's so handy for long journeys, or if I need to move heavy stuff about.

My tax, insurance and MOT are all due over the next couple of weeks, but I've been putting money aside for them every month (separate to my deposit pot), so I hope I'll be able to cover it. I haven't been doing it for a full year though, as I only started saving a few months ago, so the pot isn't as big as it will be in future years. So I hope it's going to cover everything, otherwise I'll have to dip into another pot of money. Really depends what happens with the MOT, so fingers crossed!

I know that is what I have done, I started off with 1 tab of monthly outgoings which was set-up a over a year ago and now after arranging it I have ended up with 6 tabs, it's really useful.

Well if your thinking about getting rid, why dont you sorn the car and not renew insurance and keep it off the road without mot for a few months to see if you can cope without it....this will also allow you to put a bit more money into the pot that covers that expenses!

I had a spreadsheet all set up and used it jan and feb then my comp crashed and i lost all the info...

I always think this myself, as I use the work's bus and saves me a fortune in petrol. Then I find it very useful when I need to finish work early and take the car, going food shopping, it was used to pack my stuff when I moved house and other things.

I too put money away each money month for insurance and tax. But I didn't do this for MOT which is due next month, so I will start April 1st. I was putting £10 away for tax a month, it's due October and as it's now gone up to £165, I have set it up for £13.75 a month.
