Hi guys,
Can I jump aboard please? I've finally paid off the nearly £20k of credit card debt which I had, and am now ready to save for my house. I am thinking of a £15k deposit on a £150k-ish house. Does this seem reasonable to you? I've been reading that less than 25% deposits get much worse deals, however are they bad enough to put people off them completely? I'm desperate to stop renting!
What things do you do to support your deposit building efforts? eBay etc? I have a PILE of belongings to sell which I'd rather see as bricks and mortar than their current incarnation!
I've just put away £1500 into my house saving fund, aiming fo £15k by August 2011. Must update my signature to keep me motivated!
Welcome to the thread!0 -

My savings took a bit of a hit a couple of months ago as I bought I new car for £8,000. Which is alot more expensive to insure, tax and run. But it's worth it imo!!
Planning to get back upto about £35,000 deposit by this time next year"I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -

Sounds good to me, and major congrats on paying off your debt!!! :T
I am doing lots of things - saving as much as poss, taking advantage of grabbits, voucher and deals, taking my own lunch to work, cycling/walking instead of taking the bus, only shopping in the sale, charity shops and on eBay etc etc! I made a few hundred selling on eBay and am starting to do so again now that the dark evenings are here. Twin advantages are making a few bob and decluttering at the same time, hurrah!

That's great Hostie - I'm very envious! Did it take you a long time to save up? I think it will take a few years for me at least.0 -

You will get there - my first target I set myself was to reach was £15k

How refeshing to see a thread like this.
Sensible people doing the right thing and actually saving towards a house instead of just turning up at a bank and getting a 100% or 125% mortgage!
Its just a pity we weren't all getting 6% on our ISA's like we were a few years ago
My wife and i are currently saving for a deposit and once you start to see the pounds add up it then becomes a "habit".
Good luck everyone!0 -

It's addictive isn't it! My girlfriend and I have been saving absolutely ever possible penny for a few years now.
I have £27,000 she has £24,000 and we have another £25,000 inheritance between usso it's looking for us but still going, if we find somewhere we really love at the right price we'll make an offer but at the moment just concentrating on the savings. We want as small a mortgage as possible.
I agree it's so annoying that savers get shafted! I just wish interest rates would rise!0
