  • Well, we've had a funny old week. Had two meetings with our new IFA. (about ten hours number crunching). First was very depressing, second very much more positive. We have decided to set a lower rather then higher savings target for a while. We can't beat inflation any more. there a few more prudent things we can do to make minor impact, but all things being equal we will be taking a much smaller mortgage than we had feared and have hesitantly agreed to save for another year before resuming a more serious search for Chez lostinrates. It is highly likely that our first purchase will be our last (hurrah)and we will skip the ladder all together (unless we wish to downsize later in life), but we have to take every pound seriously this year.

Ten hours number crunching? You have more stamina than I can muster! Sounds like you have a very strong plan as a result of those ten hours (ten hours!!), though. :)
A few jobs of a very different nature to apply to locally now, so I feel a bit more enthusiastic about sending of the cv for some rejections from a different industry, lol, but a change is as good as a rest (if not as good as a job!) the thing is if I get a job the entire portion can go towards the house savings, and that has to be good!

Keeping everything crossed for you :)
  • Had a good day today, made home made pizza for dinner, and got a free lunch at work :j

I am getting watching-my-online-auction addition lol

Hope everyone has a good weekend

  • Had a few one-off spends this month which I didn't account for:

Sky+ basic package - our freeview signal has been broken since we had building work start near our house, so bought Sky+ (MSE way was free box with £30 install - so not too bad). £22 a month is the downside though, however that is split between two of us.

Flights to Belfast to see my mummy - MSE way again, £130 return from Heathrow which isn't too bad. It's been a year since I've seen my Mum and she's ill so it's important I go.

BT Bill - quaterly bill needs paying £42

MOT due - due within the next few weeks.

    ===================================================

I'm also fighting the strong urge to buy a 42" Plasma TV worth £600. I've wanted one for about 5 months and spend my days off in Currys and Comet staring at the same ones week in week out. I swear some of the staff there think I actually work there part time - I should get a name badge.

I've been working a lot of overtime, just done 8 days in a row amounting to about 85 hours work.

  • I'm an idiot. Stupidly put a bet on 4 matches today as a combined bet. I gambled £50 and lost.

I never normally gamble and I'm not sure what made me do it. Bloody annoying and I won't be doing it again.

  • Can I join? We're saving for a deposit, though at the moment I'm taking a career break so the savings are taking a bit of a hammering, especially as I struggled to menu-plan etc (long story, been ill, but recovering now). I will be jobhunting from next month but expect it to take 3+ months to get settled in a post.

We have about 40% of our goal at the minute, the bulk of it in cash ISA's and I'm starting frugal living, grocery challenge etc. so hopefully it might begin to increase slightly, or at least not drop further!!

    So:
aiming for 25% deposit, by April 2010
    21/9/08: have 10%

That's what we're working towards at the moment - between us the OH and I have moved abut 6 times in the last 3 years (all between rented places), so it'd be nice to stay put for a while!

redrabbit, don't feel bad, we ALL do stupid things every now and then. I don't know if I was possessed earlier but I actually thought it would be a good idea to but £10 worth of scratchcards tomorrow. I am AVERSE to gambling and don't even do the national lottery or even the prize draws at my DD schools but I still thought it

Thanks for that, makes me feel a bit better. I've kind of moved on now, a lesson learned and won't be doing it again!

Next time I'll transfer the money to my "House Deposit" account!

    Hello everyone!

Any room for a little one? :D DH and I have been saving for a few years now for a deposit and we currently have just under £19k. We'd like to have alot more, naturally and other than winning the lottery we will just have to save up!

My salary will go up at the end of September and my take home pay will be about £100 per month higher than previously. I'm envisaging that this pay increase will go directly into our "deposit for a house" savings, along with all the other bits and pieces that go into our savings. I have separate "pots" for things like car repairs, household bills, a new car (one day, but if I don't start saving now then I'll have to get a larger than necessary loan) and holidays. I love playing around with my "savings spreadsheet" as soon as I get paid and move my money around. I suppose I could just set up standing orders into the various accounts, but I much prefer to do it manually. :D

I get very annoyed with people who demand to know when we'll be jumping on the "housing ladder". In fact, one person the other day with a 100% mortgage (bought earlier this year) was bragging how "at least they were on the housing ladder" even though a house in better condition than theirs has been reduced in the asking price by £25k BELOW what my colleague had paid for theirs. I will remain quiet......

Anyway, it's onwards and upwards with our savings. Well done to all those people who are all dedicated to upping their deposits - ie everyone on this thread!!! Some of our investments are with Halifax, but I'm not VERY panicked by their financial position (only mildly!) as savings are "protected" up to £35k.

That really winds me up as well. I hate the way people seem to think that owning your own house is the "be all and end all", and that it is the best option no matter what.

I wish people would wake up and realise that it's not ALWAYS the best option to buy a house, and it depends very much on each person's circumstances.

Sounds like you already have a good chunk of money saved up.

Can I ask, what sort of budget of house are you looking at, what location, and what are your requirements?
