I'm not secretive about it. i don't share my bank statements, but I think people would thin it was weirder if we were not saving ATM. The only type of comment that makes me uncomfortable is the 'You can afford it type of comment' because its made generally by people who afford it thanks to their credit cards or to people who are a bit older and have owned for some time. (Buying and mortgaging at much more favourable figures).

most of our friends know we have been wanting to settle down for sometime now, and working abroad sort of lengthened our search time. Most of our older friends or parent's friends still don't understand why we haven't bought and aren't jumping immeadiately now.I find the examination of our choices fairly intrusive, but TBH, inevitable.
  • Provided I can save £980 this month I'll hit 20% of my deposit goal.

I will have to be EVEN MORE frugal this month!

Hitting 20% does make me feel inspired though!! Reading everyone elses stories is really helping me be motivated so thank you all for sharing!!

Also, I concur with what Zoegirl put...................people are telling me I'm getting obsessed about money as I'm focusing on saving my deposit up. They don't seem to get that it is actually saving "for something very specific and expensive" and not just shoving money into a bank for no reason. Think from now on I'm going to just keep quiet from most people even if I am feeling excited!!

  • Thanks for your comments :)

Well, I might go and look at open homes this weekend just for the excitement

I have never done it before, and if I can't go this weekend I might go next instead. I want the motivation and I feel like I am not so far off buying, I mean I could buy now if I wanted to, but financially I am better off waiting :rotfl:

Does anyone work two jobs or do something extra to help them save the money up? lol I am posting a few things online to sell at the moment and getting rid of a few things, thinking in two weeks when I have a break from work I am going to be posting hard out to clear out my junk and make a bit of extra money :T

  • Best way to go.. buy a new build get the builder to pay for legals interior furnishings like carpets and kitchen bathroom, light bulbs etc and also put down a hefty deposit. In todays climate they would do anything for a sale.
  • phew!

not a good week! Most of my savings are with the Halifax so I was a little jittery for a while but it seems to be resolved now. Also not a good car week. A new windscreen (Autoglass, £75) and a new exhaust, new sidelights, new windscreen wiper motor and mechanism (bill not yet arrived). And thats without getting onto the suspension problems and need for two new tyres! I think I'm going to have to write this month off and hope for a better one to come!
    Current mortgage 133k
    Purchase price 171k
    Fixed deal ends sept 2019

    Savings approx 60k
  • Had a good week. Sold a book for £7.99 on amazon and have listed 3 more books! Managed to make a meal using just leftovers and homegrown basil today including a rhubarb crumble! Manged to meet a mate for lunch today in town and not spend anything in the clothes shops. Jobs to do in the next week include:

    1. attempt to get our rented flat rebranded from D to C
    2. find out how to claim a tax rebate for washing my uniform at home.. oh and a rebate on registation/union fees? Not sure I'll have to look into this!
    3. Have a look at my current savings rates - can I beat them?

With regards to telling people how much we've saved - only our parents know. I tell others we are saving hard and doing ok, thats all.
    good luck everyone!! :T

Well, we've had a funny old week. Had two meetings with our new IFA. (about ten hours number crunching). First was very depressing, second very much more positive. We have decided to set a lower rather then higher savings target for a while. We can't beat inflation any more. there a few more prudent things we can do to make minor impact, but all things being equal we will be taking a much smaller mortgage than we had feared and have hesitantly agreed to save for another year before resuming a more serious search for Chez lostinrates. It is highly likely that our first purchase will be our last (hurrah)and we will skip the ladder all together (unless we wish to downsize later in life), but we have to take every pound seriously this year.

A few jobs of a very different nature to apply to locally now, so I feel a bit more enthusiastic about sending of the cv for some rejections from a different industry, lol, but a change is as good as a rest (if not as good as a job!) the thing is if I get a job the entire portion can go towards the house savings, and that has to be good!

    A little jittery? A little??

I have a good amount with them, too - around 23k of my deposit savings- and the last few days are something I NEVER want to go through again!

When Northern Rock 'happened', it was interesting to watch and I thought the people who were queing for hours were acting very wrong, making matters worse for all. It was easy to think that when my money wasn't involved!! I have had to fight my instinct to withdraw everything I have in the Halifax over the last couple of days!

I've relaxed somewhat now, for the moment anyway, and have come down to the 'little jittery' point - hopefully I will have wound down some more in a couple of days!:D
