Hi can I join? This is officially my third post so I'm a bit new to all this although I've been a 'savings nutcase' (as my bf calls me) since I decided I would have to buy my own pony at the age of 7!
I'm feeling pretty hopeless at the moment though as I'm a first time buyer, living with parents, with virtually no savings and I only work part-time. Also my boyfriend has never saved a penny in his life so I really don't know what to do. IS there a 'saving in a relationship' or 'getting your oh to save' thread?!
I'm a bit embarassed to post my savings as they are so small as I only finished uni 2 years ago. I just had to buy a new car which I be paying £160/month for for the next 3 years but at least it has motivated me to get started doing extra supply work.
...sorry for the long and rambling post! Are there many first time buyers with virtually no savings on here?"It is often said that before you die your life passes before your eyes. It is in fact true. It's called living." Terry PratchettBought our house 2012Married 2015

Me and my girlfriend are now up to £7k. Looking forward to breaking the £10k barrier in the next couple of months. Still a very long way to go though.0

Im in the same situtation. Been out of uni 2 years, living with my folks. You need to get into the mindset that you dont "need" things.
Ive managed to save about 15k since uni, you just need to get a full time job. Whats stopping you?Mortgage Free 22/03/17

Im the same as you, I love to save money and most of the money in my sig is mine, me and oh are so different with money, he loves to spend but he is getting better and finding it difficult to pay back his debt but I refuse to help as I kept warning him when he was using credit cards to buy nice things, now he drives a nice car and a nice phone etc while mine are nearly as old as me but atleast I know they belong to me, I bought them with my money not credit cards or anything, I only work part time too so the saving is moving very slowly at the minute, but hopefully will pick up soon. And his debt is going down slowly too so he's starting the save abit more now x0 -
Good to know I'm not alone! I work part-time because I'm a teacher and there are only a few jobs for many many applicants where I live. I applied for about 30 last year and only had 2 interviews (some people get nothing) and I got the second one and couldn't risk getting nothing at all so I took it even though it's only part-time. Anyway i'm contracted for the year and jobs are starting to come up for next year now so applying like mad! I do supply teaching as well but it's not reliable and i find it really stressful.
I hate living with my parents again, but i'm letting my frustration motivate me to save and get out of here! I'm trying to spend the absolute minimum and work as much as possible and I'm going to watch the savings grow to make me feel better about the situationYay feeling positive!

i'm trying to juggle saving for a despoit, saving for money for a trip to paris, and also putting money away for my car insurance/tax/mot/incidentals and christmas, and it's all starting to make my head spin! i have 2180 in an ISA, which is towards a house deposit, and 1780 in a savings account(1600 is for paris, 180 for car stuff). i need another 900 for paris, which i hope to have by the end of april, then the bulk of my money is going towards house deposit with a little going towards a car etc. me and my boyfriend want to save 5000 each towards a house deposit this year, but i'm secretly hoping to save more than this to speed the process along a bit!
does anyone know, realistically, in northern ireland how much money you need for house buying, alongside a deposit? like for fees etc, because i think its a little different than in england? i'm very confused about it all-at the minute we are just saving, but are a bit clueless about the rest, and sort of want to know what we're doing a bit better!Mortgage free wannabe #124
