Does the cost of land and building your own house make it cheaper overall than buying as is?
On that amount of hours I would imagine you're putting aside a lot of money anyway? I work 40 hours + 10-12 hours commuting each week, my other half works 40 hours as well but only around 5 hours commute, so we spend 3 evenings and one weekend day a week devoted exclusively to extra money making. We do the usual stuff, ebaying a lot, OH had a second job for a while, surveys, mystery shopping evenings and on lunch breaks, free quidco offers and scratchies etc. We don't actually do the daily clicks as it seems like a lot of time for little reward.
Yes the cost of land + building works out cheaper - otherwise there would be no small scale builders in business and wimpey and bellways and the like would be even scarier than they already are! However it is a gamble, and the only way we are looking at such a big saving by self building is because my OH will be giving up work/taking a demotion to be able to work evenings in order to project manage on site, you also need to be confident in how the process works, as otherwise you could whack on an extra 10 months + to the build and it would 'save' a negligable amount compared to what you could have earned.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Lol that's actually us lightening up after finishing paying off the debts. We stop money making at 9pm (which means about 2 1/2 hours at it) so read, watch a movie or play a game after that. This means we get a little time off every day, but we really cherish our time doing fun 'us' things on our evenings and weekends. I've never been able to sit still and just watch tv or something, so I find how we structure things at the moment quite easy going to be honest!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Dinah - is there anything in particular you find boosts your deposit fund outside of work?
We find it difficult to do somethings with having a 4 month old and not alot of free time but could do with an income boost! xDFW Total £21,800 to clear by Dec 2022

Thank you Dinah I am putting away a reasonable amount I was including commuting in the number of hours worked, I live quite far from my workplace. It is a training position and salaried so increasing the number of hours is not really an option. But hopefully if I pass my exam in a couple of weeks I will get a pay increase. On the minus side my OH maybe being made redundant in a months time so have to see if we can increase our income.Moved in 12/09 Mortgage 126K0 -
Well that's us, today we reached our target for the house deposit we're now just waiting for the fees.
WE've found a house we both really love but currently trying to sort a mortgage out, I must admit I'm still a bit shaky round this part. My Dad has a friend who is an independant financial advisor and he's done us a favour and recommends the Britannia 5 year fixed at 5.34%, we have a meeting with them on Friday afternoon at half 1 but they've not asked us to bring anything so a bit confused, I told her we wanted to make an application?!
Going to speak to the financial advisor again tomorrow and see what the next step is, we REALLY wanna get an offer in on this house and get in there, we've waited long enough...It's always darkest before the dawn.

Yeah I think we're going to do the same, we are only gonna need around £11,500 tops for the deposit I think so we've already got a good £1300 knocking around for fees, but I would have liked more to be safe.
Thanks for the congrats, good luck to you too, I'll keep you all posted with what happens with this house, they're not in a chain and have already move to a house so its empty waiting to go!! The price agreement, mortgage, survey etc all to come!!It's always darkest before the dawn.

When I went to see britannia a little while ago they also wanted to talk about affordability so I worked out the cost of bills etc so that the mortgage advisor could see that we could afford to live after the repaymentsDon't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0
