2 Credit Searches for one Mortgage Application!

Options
I'm in the process of changing my mortgage from A&L to Barclays. I noticed on my Experian Report that Barclays performed 2 (Mortgage) Credit searches on me for the 1 application.

The first was when we went into Barclays for a decision in principle quote. The second after we submitted our application to them (presumably by their New Business/Pre Offer team). The Mortgage Advisor clearly wrote on our Application not to do another search as she already carried it out. This was within 2 weeks of each other.

Can I complain and have them remove the second credit search?

I don't like any unnecessary footprints on my report.

Barclays did the same to me recently when I applied for a current account to view my isa accounts. I complained to the credit reference agency and they in turn contacted Barclays and they got one of the credit searches removed.

From experience it is far easier to complain through the credit agency rather than approaching the company yourself.

A bank recently did the same to me - applied two credit searches for a current account application. After a moan at them, they contacted Experian and had one of them removed.

Yup and they will probably do another just before the final offer is sent out.

There is a credit crunch going on and the underwriters are told to make sure they only put through quality in the high street. So yes, they reserve the right to check multiple times, especially if it takes a long time to complete.

    And no, dont bother complaining.

I will disagree with you about the bank's right to do this under TCF. I am now in the process of asking them to justify 2 credit searches in the space of 1 week for the same application. This is not fair and doesn't show up much in that short space of time. I'm confident I have a case.

Well try and go for it. What do I know I only worked for banks for a while and now a broker. I know the procedure and the underwriter does not give one tiff whatever the adviser wrote on the application. Its the underwriter who has to decide if they will lend to you. If the underwriter writes too many "bad" mortgages its then the chop, chop for him/her.

So complain away, give the underwriter hell who has to approve your mortgage.
I can see them asking for all kind of extra info just to be "helpful" .

TCF + banks = I am laughing so hard it hurts.... :rotfl:

...and I've only worked for a Mortgage broker for the last 6 years

TCF - take it seriously though you may laugh away.

Unless they are applying the same procedure to the majority of their applications (i.e. 2+ credit searches for the same application in a very short space of time like mine) then I have a case.

I don't think the underwriter did it - I suspect some blind pre-offer administrator ignoring the fact that we had the credit search done in advance to save time with the application. I'll update you in due course though. We already have our mortgage offer.

TCF : I do take it seriously as brokers will get hammered if we do not do it, however the banks will get away with it. Hence me laughing.

How are you going to find out how many times they check? Its a battle you will lose. I have been there and tried. Customer got searched 7 times in 3 days. Was told it was a computer glitch. Yeah right.

LOL if you worked for a broker the you should know that Barclays always do 2 and have done for a while. In fact the way the credit checks means that on the 2nd check they can decline on score or info missed on the first. Two checks should not make much difference to your life. It also prevents them missing you obtaining credit or mortgages while applying for this one.

So what if Barclays do 2. If you are only applying for one mortgage then its not going to be an issue.

Mountains and molehill come to mind here.
