Help please, OR and car

Yup, that's something I'm considering. I bought the car for £275 and it's run for 11 months so got my money's worth there! If i have to pay another £300 for it and then put it through an MOT which could clock up a few more hundred - it's an old jalopy and who knows what might need fixing - then I might just be better off getting another set of wheels with a 12 month ticket and let the OR have it for what's left after the cost to take it away!
On the other hand I need a car on the road by Easter weekend as I have to collect my daughter from school (62 mile round trip) and she will be home for 4 weeks which is when I need a car more.
I guess I'll try talking to the OR again tomorrow and see if they'll accept less than £300 and go from there...
Thanks for helping me think this through

If you only really really need it for the Easter hols, then could you not taxi/coach/train instead?? (Says me in a big town who can get almost anything!) It may work out cheaper than paying the OR for the car - as you said its going to cost yet more to MOT it anyway??0

Hi skylight
Sorry to hear you look like you're going to lose your car. Re. insurance - I think you might be able to put your insurance policy on hold; last year I had my car broken into and trashed so I had to scrap it. I called the insurance company and said I would be looking to buy a new car as soon as I could but I would have to save up first. They put my policy on hold until I got the new car. Maybe worth ringing them up and asking if they will and how long for?

I have been working just that out today. There is no way they are going to let me keep my car (I will send them a pressie if they do!) so I need to buy a new one. I reckon that in 4 months I could save enough in my budget by allocating the monies from what I would normally spend on running costs.
However - what happens with my insurance and canceling it? I know it not my thread, but we both need to know! Most insurances charge a cancellation fee????
I would say that you would have to weigh up what it would cost you/what you would lose to cancel your insurance, maybe it would be cheaper to just keep it on till you get your new vehicle, i know with many insurances you could lose from 50% or more of the years cost if canceling part way through the year.Life is like a game of Snakes & Ladders, i almost made it to the top but now i'm at the bottom again and its a very long ladder to the top. I had it all and now its gone
Well my 6 years are now up, now to start to rebuild my life again

Just a quick note to let you know the outcome with the car: -
Spoke with the OR again today, who's now had time to read the supporting documents I sent. Won't reverse decision to include the value of the car as an asset, but has slightly reduced the amount I have to pay to buy the car back to £250, to take into account the cost of putting it through an MOT next month.
So I now have to get a quote for the MOT, find £250! but at least I then still have a car:)

I can't beleive what an !!!! that OR is being, my interview is today and I m bound to get him lol. My cars a banger too, if he wants it he can have, there is no way I'm paying money for it, I will be gutted though because although it is banger it is my old faithful banger which gets the kids to school everyday.0

To be totally fair with mine, I haven't actually paid for the loan I used to purchase the car and therefore haven't technically paid for the car! Its not a banger - not pristine either, but valued at about £1k. Unless the OR wants me to pay him peanuts for it, he can keep it as there is no way I can pay (or would want to pay) that much for the car.
Plus there are only 4 x 3x3 point seat belts in it and 5 in the family, so we cannot all go out together anyway! Will do my bottom and tummy good all that walking!
(Secretly I am hoping that I get a really nice OR who will let me keep it, so I can sell it and buy something with 5 x 3x3 point seat belts, but I am not holding my breath!)0 -

I can't believe your OR is being such a pain about the car.My OR let me keep mine and it was worth a lot more than yours-I also don't work, but do use it to take the kids to school(an hour's walk to one,30 mins to walk to the next school and thern an hour home again). There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to cars.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

Can you help? I'm hoping to buy a car in the next few weeks. I read in auto trader that the average milage for a car is 10k. So how do you calculate a reduction for a car "say its 05 and the milage is just under 30k when ideally it should be 10k". I hope you understand what I'm getting at?. Some cars i veiwed were over priced and i dont aim to get ripped off.0
