Should I be paying NI contributions?

I have not been employed for 2 years now however I do have a personal income from property. Should I be paying NI contributions in order to secure the state pension when I reach retirement age? This is still a long way off as I am only 24.

Thanks in advance

- Andy

As I understand it YES you should be paying your NI contributions... someone will be along to tell you how to go about it.. but you should make up the missing 2yrs worth or you will get a reduced pension from the state when you retire...

  • Hi Andy,

You will more than likely not need to pay national insurance. If you wanted to, you could pay a class 3 cobtribution which goes towards pension. You only need 30 years of conts to be entitled to a full state pension so it really depends on what you plan to do in the future...... do you have plans to get employment?? if so could make these 30 years up in the future without having to worry about making class 3 payments at the minute...

    Good luck!!
