Why can't I get a credit card?

Hello all

This has been a bit of a problem for me for a couple of years now - when the whole 0% balance transfer theory came about I transerred balances a couple of times.

I've generally got a good credit rating with no defaulted payment ever, and one late payment in the last three years... I've checked my credit file and all is okay.

So, when I apply for a credit card - why on earth am I getting knocked back. I've currently got an egg money account, barclaycard and amex red... and would like to consolidate them to one card but for whatever reason I have been declined... and I haven't been applying constantly either.

Any help or advice would be great.

P.S. If it is of any help, I've got a balance on all my cards of around £3.5k and given my income it's very affordable. When I apply online it applies straight away, it doesn't go through to a human.

Have you checked your credit report to see if there is anything on that which may be affecting your applications?

Is your credit rating joined with someone who may have a bad rating? Joint account etc?

Are you on the electoral roll at your current address? This can sometimes impact your credit score (not worth paying to see what this is though as different organisations work it out differently)

You say with your income it is very affordable, but do you have loans or a mortgage that would also need to be taken into account? Usually once you owe more than 70% of your income, it is very tight (not including mortgage)

    Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0

  • Hi George

Yeah credit report all fine, there was one association that I had removed. I'm on the electoral register etc etc so that is fine.

With regards to income, yeah that should be fine - maybe it is the percentage thing. I've just been accepted for a mortgage on a new house -but that hasn't actually gone through yet - would an automated system see this though?
