I'd second getting cookery books from the library - it's a good idea to try out a few and see how you get on with them, especially if you think you can't cook (You're the opposite of me - I can cook but can't bake anything )
I'd recommend Delia Smith's various cookery course books if you want detailed and nearly foolproof instructions. I find her a bit rigid, but if your used to baking you might like the strictness. If you fancy something which can be played around with you could try pretty much anything by Nigel Slater - but especially Appetite as he tends to be pretty vague about measurements and will suggest lots of things you can fiddle with to make the recipe more to your taste. Jamie Oliver's Jamies Dinners is also good in this respect.April Grocery Challenge: £250/£127.530
