hi all
i got made redundant from my old job last week and i seen something which i wanted to do the thought of sitting about was to much.
anyway its a job as a chinese delivery driver what happens is they pay £20
petrol allowance and i get to keep any tips and delivery charges i have done one shift already.
and i volunteer what days i want to do im aiming for 5 if i can
so what im wondering is this self employment or free lance as i am wanting to pay my n.i contributions and tax and im a bit puzzled as his is first time ive done this type of work.
what do i need to keep a hold of or record i dont get the receipts of the orders as they keep them for there own records
i think thats about main details hope someone can help whos had similar job
or can point me in right direction.
thanks scott.

advice for maximising tips................
never go with their change ready, always carry a bag full of change, most of the time people cant be bothered to wait for you to rummage through your bag to get them the right change, this works most of the time. its a bit shady yeah but ive known myself to bring home £40+ a night in tips thanks to that little trick0 -
If they are not paying a salary, then you'll have to register as self employed. Have a look at the pages on www.hmrc.gov.uk for information on how to register.
You'll have to pay Class 2 NI which costs £2.20 a week. If you expect to earn less than approx £4500 a year, you can apply for a small earnings certificate meaning you don't have to pay. However it might be prudent to pay if this is your only job in case you need benefits such as incapacity if you are sick or have an accident and can't work. I paid and was able to claim full maternity allowance last year. The NI also counts towards your state pension.
You'll need to keep a basic set of accounts - just money coming in and money going out connected to the job. Also keep a record of how many business miles you do. You'll need all of this for your tax return at the end of the tax year.
Also check your car insurance covers you for business use, and upgrade your cover if you don't already have this. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Definately make sure you have the correct insurance, it sometimes doesn't cost any extra depending on the company you are with but could go up a lot.
As an example recently a friend of my partners was given 6 points and fined £600 for driving without valid insurance as he was delivering for a local takeaway in his own car.
Costs aswell to think of are the additional wear and tear on your vehicle, if possible ask the other drivers what milage they are doing roughly so you can work it out over the year, it might mean more brakes, tyres etc than it's worth using. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
Thank you for the replys so far
i have been looking into current car insurance and they do business cover
but they dont cover fast food delivery driver.
i have been online through moneysupermarket and used the filters and stating what i need when i go to actual companys site its the same scenario
they dont cover fast food when i ring up.
i tried a company called call connections and again same trouble they couldnt find anyone on there system searching multiple insurerers."red sky at night angel delight, red sky in the morning...ANGEL DELIGHT!!0 -
Just try the job out for a week or two to see if you like it, its not everyone's cup of tea. Especially when your really busy on a friday night running round like a nutter delivering takeaways.
Remember they can just drop you if you arent working as quickly as they want.0 -
