Is being debt free worth it if I kill myself in the process?

Some recently posted that in a year, everything would be forgotten. All the late nights and then early mornings the next day, the !!!!!y comments, the walking miles in the snow to save on bus fare - it would all be worth it. Except they said it better than I did.

But now I'm wondering if that's actually true. I have a bad wrist and I'm currently sitting here in agony, and maximum dose of painkillers and everything else isn't helping much. So maybe it isn't all going to be worth it.

I'm not sure why I'm writing this. I just wanted opinions I guess

No it isn't! I do speak from experience here, this time last year I was workin 37 hrs in my main job as a deputy manager and covering for the manager who was on long term sick leave and also working 14 hrs a week in my 2nd job. I had a recent diagnosis of a long term health condition and was dealing with that too... life was one long stressy dash from one place to another, with the bare minimum of 6 hrs sleep a night and not enough hours in the day to see friends and family and go out and do fun stuff!

Come dec last year, I just thought f**k this life style and quit my full - time job, which was scary and am now working 17.5 hrs a week with the option of doing extra if and when I want too. I decided that life was too precious and that I was not having any kind of life in my desperate attempt to earn as much as could to clear my debts in as short a period as possible.

Not everyone can afford to do what I have done and I don't advocate it, but my life was no life. I'm gonna have a few more months piddling along doing not very much and then restock in the summer when a few opportunities are coming up... the weirdst thing is... I have more money in my bank account today than I ever did on the 5th of any month when I was working 3 times as many hours... weird huh?!

Give yourself a break and (I'm not talking about your wrist!) get the bus, get !!!!ed, have a takeaway, buy a bar of chocolate, get your hair cut etc etc and treat yourself!

Hi Juno, it's definately not worth making yourself miserable or ill!
There has got to be some balance I guess.
I must admit that I am going for broke at the moment as my Husbands wages go down in July when his contract ends, & we may not have the same kind of money in for some time, ( the money we're getting at the moment isn't loads! ) so I need to clear as much as I can to make life a little easier when the money goes down.
I must admit some days I feel sooo down it's unbelievable, but I'm hoping this will only be short term maybe another year??? I would love to be DF by Xmas or as soon after as possible.
I don't think I could be as "careful" as I am now for ever, it would make you so miserable, but short term, I'm going to try to handle it.

I think it can be done for short sharp bursts but not indefinately, not at the rate you are going!

I know exactly how you feel Juno and now I've stopped being so fanatical about it all. I suppose I'm lucky that my debt levels are relatively low but you get obsessed to a point of you must get that last piggy point by tapping 'F5 -page refresh on IE7' over and over again to get 5 points!!! Now that's enough to get committed isn't it?

I agree CG, I'm currently looking to get into a part-time lecturing role that will pay as much as the full-time job I'm doing at the moment but with much less hours, partly because I hate my full-time job and partly because I don't want to end up in an early grave working like a t**t! It might just take a bit longer to pay off my debts!!

I am trying to get a second job to help clear my debts. I already work full time and have a busy life but I know that I have to do something my debt is huge.
I know it is going to be tough, it's going to be tiring, but I think I will feel better for doing it. I just have to keep focusing on the long term benefits when I get tired and grumpy!

I think the main thing is try to keep up something that you enjoy - a hobby, sport etc so it is not all bleak and work.

 Never mind killing yourself chick, it's not even worth permanently injuring yourself!

Have you had that wrist properly checked out? Nurse Jacks ;) says you should - asap! (and I'm a bonafide Nurse - I've got the outfit and everything!;):D )

I got a bit demoralised myself a little while ago, and it was a clear cut case of too much work and stress and not nearly enough shaking my booty on a dancefloor whilst giggling my head off with the girls.

I tend to get all gung ho and want to be debt free by next week at the very latest - when in fact it's the slow and steady approach that wins in this game.

So take stock honey, and maybe take it down a gear for a little while.

Definitely hop on the blimmin bus if it's snowing or you feel knackered and fed up.
And build a bit more  :grouphug:  :j _party_ into your life.

Even if it means your DFD gets pushed back a tiny bit.

I know from experience that it's when I'm feling hard done by and totally tapped out of enthusiasm that I'm likely to spend money to cheer myself up. It's better not to get so fed up in the first place really isn't it.

Chin up chicken, I hope you feel better soon.

    Love Jacks xxx :D

I think some of it is my income is less than a lot of you on here,, so I see everyone's debt going down quickly and mine isn't going anywhere near as fast. And some of you can work 60+ hours a week, whereas I'm struggling on just 30.

I bought some hair dye today. It cost £5, and I kinda feel guilty. But I'll still be debt free eventually, and when I am I'll have nice hair!
