The boiling with washing powder helped enormously but there was still a lot burned on. It all came off in the end with elbow grease! thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try the rhubarb leaves next time!

Aldi do something called "Magnum Power Spray" which shifts anything. Not too expensive, and you just spray it on the burnt bits and leave it a while. Then rinse off and wash as normal.
You could have used Fairy powerspray, I use it on the BBQ and oven tins, it does work, but its not really OS, its full of god knows what chemicals but for really bad gunk it does work.
