The Unbanked: A national disgrace

Thanks for replying....Yes he does have a passport and a photo driving licence that the address is about to be changed to mine.
At the moment he is using a bank account in my name where he holds the card to draw his cash and no overdraught facility [deliberatly so he can only spend what is his]
Long term this is a bad arrangement as he really needs to start having his own account.
As a lad he had an account with the Woolwich but that seems to have dissapeared along with the Woolwich. He has no records of it and is sadly estranged with his parents at this time.
If all else fails maybe a new joint account for now..if that works with any banks as he still won't hold any of the documents required.

I currently have an HSBC Cash Card account, but, as I've just had my third 'bounced' direct debit, they are closing it (Two were for TV license, first was my own fault, after that, I asked them to change the day they took it to 1st month, but they didn't, then one this month when my landlord requested rent a bit late, I thought it had already gone out!)
So we're not going to have an account with them from the start of March anymore - I went to Lloyds today to ask for a basic account & transfer our exisiting direct debits over, and after going through an application, the person doing our application had to call through, came back and asked for address going back even further, and asked if I had any credit in any other name (i don't) and I was then declined!
I'm going to apply at Nationwide for their basic account too, but was quite embarrassed and surprised at getting turned down for a basic account at Lloyds. When the application started, I was told that 'We'd see what account we can offer you' despite my first stipulation for a basic one with No credit facilities - I wonder if they just didn't listen - or has anyone else been refused a basic account too?0 -
Try Alliance & Leicester - from a colleague's experience, who got an account there,
A&L are prepared to take on someone who other people (including me) would not touch.0
