Claiming state pension

Got a letter inviting me to claim my state pension. I have a choice of filling a form or do it on the phone. I remember when my husband claimed his, he had to send his birth certificate & I had to go to the job centre to have it certified as a true copy. Just wonder how this will work out on the phone, also not sure about tax reference, I have got a PAYE reference and a Pensions reference, which one should I put? I guess, it might be better to post the form but not sure what documents to post. Thanks

Hi loulou not really got the answers to your questions just curious how far off 60 are you? I will reach that golden number in July and just wonder when I can expect my 'invitation'? :rotfl:
Does it not say on the form which documents are required?

It's much easier to claim it on the phone and you may not need to supply a birth certificate. The main number needed is your NI number.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

They will put you off and ask you to call back a month before your birthday well they did to me, something about being to busy.

Will be 60 at the end of June. Been given the option of claiming on the phone or download a form and post it to them. There was no form in the post I received this morning. Also am just wondering whether this will be taxed at 20% as I already received a NHS pension.
  • The birth certificate is only needed if your birth date is not verified on the Pension system.

They will adjust the tax code on your NHS pension to take account of the tax due on your state pension, which will be received gross.
