Help! Advice needed on fraud & debt

Hi there peeps
I was wondering if some kind person could give me some advice about a very worrying matter.
Yesterday my mother received a letter from Natwest's collection department at her address for a Mr Cable, they were demanding £23'000 that he apparently owes.
Mr Cable has never lived at my mother's address (she has lived there for over 25 years)...this is the first letter she has ever had regarding a Mr Cable and she doesn't even bank with Natwest.
She was obviously worried and rang the Natwest number to inform them that Mr Cable doesn't live and never has lived at her house.
The woman on the phone was very unhelpful and said she couldn't tell my mother anything about the account but would put on the computer that he was not known at that address.
This hasn't stopped my mother worrying...is there anything else she can do to ensure that this case of fraud/computer error or whatever it is doesn't effect her credit rating.
Thanks in advance.

protogenia sorry I can't offer direct advice but I am sure someone will be along shortly who can - just wanted to stop this slipping down the list too quickly0

Any other correspondence should be returned unopened clearly marked "RETURN TO SENDER, ADDRESSEE NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS"0

We had similar thing, at first we returned letters as 'not known at this address' as thought it was a mistake on name, then as got more and more started opening them, shocked to find someone got loan at our address.
Makes me annoyed.. how is it responsible lending to give someone not registered or with any connections whatsoever with address many thousands of pounds?! sorry, i digress.
your mother needs to speak to fraud dept, insist on it if necessary. also put in information in writing.
we had to do all this, eventually letters stopped, tho we had to laugh when they sent the fraudter a customer satisfaction survey - nearly filled it in cos i bet he loved the free money!! lolWho says I have to be normal?

forgot to say, after we had notified them of fraud bank told us we were at liberty to throw all correspondence away although we kept it for a while just in case it was needed for anything.Who says I have to be normal?

Send something to the bank via recorded delivery stating that noone of that name has lived at that address. (Banks have a nasty habit of losing letters the more important they are!). Mark it for the Chief Exec's Office and ask for their written confirmation that they are investigating.
It may seem overkill, but with banks and money it's best to take no chances.Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0
