what are my rights on claiming expenses for returning goods?

I bought my daughter a pair of sandals from russell and bromley in bluewater (50 miles away). She was measured and I was told the sandals were a good size with growing room because that were a half size big.
On closer inspection at home, I found that actually barely fitted at all.
I contacted their customer services, saying I would have to return for a bigger size or refund and asked them to refund my travel costs.
They said it was not their policy to pay travel costs, but may make some form of compensation if a problem is found.
Does anyone know what my legal rights are?
